Varlamovs Mask

This is what the painter said about it:

Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche, 2011

Snowball bazooka on Varlamov's Colorado mask

It's so fun to be Semyon Varlamov's painter. And this Colorado design we created together is just what it is named... Action in the Rocky Mountains! Semyon wanted something action packed with a lot of cool details, and something different... I started to do some sketches...and these dudes started to come to life in my sketches... So why not a cool war between Yeti dudes and Frosty dudes?!

The mask is hit by a snowball right in the middle of the face, and after that it's action all over the mask! Watch out...these characters are some pretty hi tech dudes...not only do they throw nowballs... No, this Yeti he has a Snowball bazooka...and of course, Frosty he has a carrot bazooka...

As you can see I had a lot of fun creating this design for Semyon with a sweet mix of Rocky Mountains and Russia, a lot and a lot of cool details. For example one of the mountain tops are transformed into one of the tops of the Vasilij Cathedral, and you also find a cool russian jet flying there, and much much more...!

What do you guys think about the mask?

Lols, he has a carrot bazooka on his mask. 20 bucks says he is the first and only NHL goalie to depict one of those on their mask.

Would like to see the back plate and a straight dead-on view of the mask, but it is not bad.

I'm not a big fan of masks with this much stuff on it. Up close the individual parts look fine but at a distance it just looks messy. But as long as he stops the puck, he can have whatever he wants on his mask.

I think it's a cool mask. On the topic though, both JS and Semyon have ugly pads lol.

Semyon is approaching GOAT status with his mask designs imo. Some of his masks with the Caps:

Winter classic mask:

Anyway, I really like his new design. Very snazzy.

I love his mask, it looks pretty sweet IMO

I also love his Mount Rushmore mask from when he was with the Caps.

Looks pretty cool.

But what's with the glove? Is he going to keep the old glove with Caps colours or will he get a new one?

Trust me, gloves are the hardest to break in and usually takes 1-2 weeks for NHL, and longer for minor competitive hockey.

I love his new mask, freaking sweet, love the little details in it too (russian jet, both US/RUS flags). His pads are okay, Giggy has some nice pads, but don't like his Anderson esque mask

at least Giguere incorporated the silver into the pads, they are a little busy, but they are growing on me.

Varly's are okay, kinda wish both guys weren't in reebok's, liked varly's vaughn's more.

No questioning the artist's talent -- I just think the design is really busy. Those details are really cool to see up close, but I think that gets lost as soon as you're looking from any sort of distance. Not a fan of either of the goalies' new pads.

Goalie's mask's are really a personal representation though, they aren't quite meant to be seen from up in the nosebleeds or even from behind the net. The guy who wears it has some attachment to it and likely doesn't care too much about the look of it from a distance. Its about time a mask with some character to it has come to colorado, i like it, it maybe busy, but its actually laid out really well, just takes some time to see everything .

I'm assuming pads are designed not to be esthetically pleasing but are mostly white with some irregular shapes on them to mess with shooters?

I absolutely agree, and I certainly love all the personal touches - I guess my own critique would be that a lot of those fascinating details get lost because of that massive "snowball splat". The snowman/bigfoot aspects just look like part of that splat at first glance. Don't get me wrong, it's a great mask - I really like the Bauer model as well. Of course just about anything is better than Andy's masks.

This. If anything the mask is mostly supposed to be liked by the goalie wearing it, and in pictures. Not sure where else you're supposed to be able to admire it from. Show me some masks that are obviously very nice from 200 feet away, or from the regular camera in a televised game.
