I don't know if he's a genius at work but no matter what ESPN and ND want us to think, he isn't entirely naive since he obviously made up some stuff.

There are enough holes in the story to make you think the guy can't be *that* smart but he was conniving enough to keep the story going.

I think he didn't need to be that smart because nobody wanted to know the truth. He gave really cursory and kinda not that convincing answers to a lot of those questions about the girlfriend but everyone was so willing to believe it, nobody gave it a second thought. And it's obvious why - everyone from local journalists, ND officials to ESPN producers stood to profit from this story.

Something like that though, if you really were duped, and 2 days later you're at the Heisman presentation, how is a 21 year old supposed to deal with looking like an absolute moron on the national stage? Yeah, now it's coming out and he looks awful but I don't know how I'd react to news like that, but I imagine I'd try to keep a business as usual and nothing has changed type of attitude or else I'd have a friggin' melt down.

The guy is the best player on the #1 team in the nation and he has an online girlfriend that he never met? He would have girls at Notre Dame all over him. I don't buy it.

People lose people every day. It's impossible to feel for everyone. And as far as ND goes, I feel much more for the **** victim who killed herself than I do for Te'o who's gonna go make a few million in the NFL.

I suppose it's fair tho. She didn't play football, so why should her story matter?

Also, I eagerly await more crocodile tears coming from this story.

ESPN reporting that Tuiasasopo confessed to some woman (who then told ESPN) that he duped Te'o.

Still doesn't make sense that at some point Te'o didn't realize it was a fake.

Some of his former teammates have said they then knew she wasn't real and that he kept it going for the publicity. A few others said that she was real but definitely not his girlfriend and again kept the lie going for the pub...

Who knows

They also have recordings of mantis parents saying that their son and his "gf" met multiple times. This obviously conflicting with what manti and notre dames ad saying that they never met and it was strictly all online.

Very fishy

I think Te'o duped his parents on that.

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man who has been publicly identified as being behind the Manti Te'o girlfriend hoax, called a church friend in early December crying and admitted to duping the Heisman finalist, the friend told Outside the Lines Thursday.

The friend, a woman in her mid-20s, agreed to be interviewed under the condition that she not be identified, saying she was fearful for her family's safety because of the overwhelming publicity the story has generated. In the interview, she did allow for her voice to be recorded.

She says Tuiasosopo gave her the tearful confession and account of how he played, what he said was at first a game, on the unsuspecting Te'o. And, she says, he told her that it wasn't the first time he had done it.

"He (Ronaiah) told me that Manti was not involved at all, he was a victim. ... The girlfriend was a lie, the accident was a lie, the leukemia was a lie," said the woman. "He was crying, he was literally crying, he's like 'I know, I know what I have to do.'

Even all that could be a lie to cover up Manti in all of this. I don't know what to believe.

See I can buy that angle up to a certain point. There's just nothing to make me believe that the ruse could be kept that strong for that long. My guess is that Te'o started to figure it out or Tuiasosopo came clean to Te'o some time early this season if not this summer and he still ran with it as a side story, especially as the Heisman hype machine started plowing along behind him.

That is probably the least surprising bit of what's been going on in this whole thing.

Honestly, I'd take that with a very healthy dose of skepticism. Remember, there are literally millions on the line on the question of whether Te'o was a dumb victim here or a cynical manipulator. NFL teams and sponsors can accept a football player being dumb as a rock, but being a self-serving liar to that extent is a much bigger issue. A guy like Te'o can be the meal ticket for a lot of people. It would in fact make sense for Tuiasosopo to fall on the sword if that protected the "Te'o brand".

IMO there's a lot of duplicity here, from the Te'o camp, from Notre Dame, from the media. It all smells like a load of self-serving crap from all those parties. Having recently read Josh Luchs's book on that dubious world between college football and the NFL I can't believe any of those guys. College coaches and college players are often in bed with agents and agents are in bed with sports media figures.

All of these reports defending Te'o by saying he was duped are all coming from ESPN. Won't believe it until I see other sources reporting it.

Agreed. Once again, who in this digital age (and was the least bit savvy about twitter/fb) could fall victim to this.

The two stories now coming out (that this kid in CA had scammed someone else before, and that he had confessed in Dec that it was "all him" with no involvement from Teo) both scream damage limitation to me.

A couple of days have passed with silence from the original "victim" of this whole thing, and now the guy he might have conspired with is trying to take the whole rap on his own, with the support of some other people who have (for some reason) kept quiet about being duped until now.

Too many holes in this story. Too much suspicious backpedaling
