Ryan Whitney to Detroit

Would Wings fans be interested in signing him? Would he fit in well in Babcocks system? I think he would make a great pairing with Kronwall. What would the wings be willing to offer him? Hes been battling injuries but if he can stay healthy I see him putting up 55 pts easy on this team.

While I think Detroit would welcome having Whitney the biggest issue i see with these two teams trading is that both their biggest needs is Defense. Just dont think they are good trade partners. Not to mention I think Edmonton needs him more to be honest.

His talent has never been in question, only his health. Just like Markov in Montreal it makes the most sense for Edmonton to just hold on to him and hope he recovers rather than take some lesser piece for him which is all that would be offered.

Whitney is worth way more to us here than he currently is in a trade. If Whitney can skate like he could a year and a half ago he will still be our best defencemen. When he was able to skate he was playing 27-30 minutes a night and scoring at over a 60 point pace. We need that here in Edmonton if its still there. Even if its not we need to find out if it is before making a move.

Gotta keep Whitney especially if he's healthy. I like Whitney and J. Schultz to be the #1 pairing.

I don't think he's asking his trade value, I'm pretty sure he's asking if Detroit is willing to sign him when he is a UFA. He is a UFA after this....uhhh..."season".

I think the Oilers will re-sign him, mainly because he is good in the dressing room with the kids.

He'd be a good fit on Detroit though.

We have Smith, Cola, Kronwall, White, Quincey and Kindl as puck movers. Yeah, let's get another one.

Legit defensive D's: Ericsson.

That's it. And I'm assuming Ericsson continues where left off last season.

I like Ryan Whitney, but his days are numbered in Edmonton. J.Schultz and Petry are going to see most of the ice time with Smid and N.Schultz. He would end up playing 3rd line minutes, and with the Oilers needing the grit Sutton and Peckham supply, he easily could be the odd man out.

Then there is the question of Ryan Whitney's health, he'll never be 100%, due to the foot injury. He'll supply some team a good 2nd line PMD, but not at his past salary, unless some team takes a chance on him.

If the NHL restarts this season, I could see the Oilers show casing him, giving him tons of minutes to get the best possible value for him. If Oduya got a 2nd+3rd, Whitney might get you a late 1st or a 2nd+prospect. Teams like the Jets and Philadelphia could be possibly interested.

.
Has Whitney or the team doctor said he'll never be 100%?
Or is his foot injury a re-occuring injury?

Whitney mentioned it last season, he'll never regain full mobility of the foot or ankle. I think it was about 80% they were hopping for, but you never know, with this time off things might change. Still at 80% Whitney is better then most 2nd pairing D out there and you did see a improvement each game as he played last season.

Oh that's rough.

I wonder how it'll effect his next contract.

I hope that Whitney comes back about 90% and with that want him to stay in EDM; Whitney is more than just an offensive dman; he is very good defensively also.

I would say that N.Shultz and Smid are better defensively then Whitney. Whitney and Peckham might be a good pairing, would be interesting.

He didn't say flat out it would never be 100% he said it may never be the same again. He also said what he really needed was 6 full months to strengthen it and go from there. He just got that time so it's going to be interesting to see what happens. Smid said on the radio about 3 weeks ago that he skated with him and he looks good and he thinks he'll have a big season. We'll see what happens.

if we lost Whitney our defence would be as bad as the Wings defence is today.

You mean our 2nd #1 Pairing

With Smid And Petry were put together after gilbert injury Dubnyk was .928 Save% for last half.

Dubnyk was .750 Win% and .938 Save% with

Smid-Petry 1sts
Whitney-N. Schultz 2nds

from the trade deadline.

luckily we had KHB to keep us in the lottery.
Since Xmas:
1W - 12L - 3OTL .147 Win%

Jan 22: Whitney (ankle) will give his ankle one more try before calling it a season, according to the Edmonton Journal. Whitney admits the ankle still isn't 100% and may not be until he can rest it for an extended period of time. He is willing to try and play through the pain and see if he can finish out the season, if not he will hang up the skates until training camp next season. Whitney will try and play Monday or Tuesday assuming he passes the fitness test Sunday.

The Wings don't need another offensive defenseman, and Whitney is both injury-prone and overrated.

Detroit doesn't need offensive defensemen, they need defensive defensemen

Whitney would do both jobs if healthy. If fully healthy he can put up anywhere between 40-60 points while playing solid reliable D.
