Sunday is perfect for me since I work on Saturday. Wish it was at home though.

Not putting all Canadian teams on opening night HNIC would be a huge fail.

In Vancouver for our first game? Boo.

Hopefully the Canucks play the night before, although I wouldn't be surprised if the late HNIC game is some Calgary/Columbus borefest.

They should have games all day for Saturday.

WIN/OTT
XXX/VAN
TOR/MTL
CAL/EDM

CBC would get huge ratings, I'd think.

I agree. I don't understand why the NHL would waste an available building date (Oilers were supposed to play Anaheim originally on January 19th) for no reason.

I think it is because CBC has the rights to all Canadian teams on Sat nights. They apparently want the Vancouver game for the late one, and they obviously will have the Leafs for the 5:00 game. So there isn't a time spot for them to play the Oilers game. It's a shame they couldn't get things started before the 19th.

Still a pretty crummy situation for Oiler fans.

Does anybody know the kind of ratings CBC gets for a typical Canuck game vs an Oilers game?

I know the Canucks own pretty much all of B.C while the Oilers have the share the Alberta fanbase with the Flames but it should still be somewhat close I would think. There are a lot of immigrants in B.C, and many of them aren't interested in hockey. Then you have to consider the fact that the Oilers probably have a good chunk of fans in Saskatchewan and probably more fans scattered across the country due to the Gretzky era. For example, my family is from B.C, and we are all Oiler fans thanks to Gretzky. I can't imagine any reason why somebody not from B.C would become a Canucks fan.

That's gotta be the intro music for the Oilers home opener:

They can all come out skating onto the ice wearing shades.

Sure every other fanbase around the league will **** on them for doing it but it would look hella cool and would be funny to watch.

TSN put together their own power rankings. sports Illustrated has put edm at 3rd overall as you know. TSN has edm much more reasonably placed at 16th. Its worth noting Scott Cullen put this together and i don't like Scott Cullen lol
Here is what Cullen had to say about edm in his article:
"After years of languishing at the bottom of the rankings, the Edmonton Oilers are poised for a jump and open this season ranked 16th, an indication that a playoff berth ought to be within their grasp."
In the actual list of teams Cullen writes about edm:
"All the young talent is falling into place and could really be kickstarted with the addition of D Justin Schultz, the dynamic offensive defenceman who scored 48 points in 34 AHL games and will upgrade the Edmonton power play immediately. If G Devan Dubnyk is up to the task as the No. 1 'tender, Edmonton may finally be ready to leave the lottery behind.
Key Injuries: LW Ryan Jones (eye)."

I can't imagine Vancouver vs Anaheim ratings would be better than Calgary vs Edmonton. Battle of Alberta with this Oilers team, this game would be a draw across the country. No one outside of BC gives two ****s about watching Vancouver play the Ducks. Makes 0 sense to me.

I'm extremely disappointed about the decision to not have the BOA as our home/season opener.

Thanks for nothing, CBC.

That's the best part of actually being at the game, you don't have to listen to Mark Lee or Kevin Weekes.

Saturday night home opener >>>>>>>>> Tuesday night home opener.

Now that's a ranking I can comfortably agree with. Definitely poised for a jump in the ranks, but 3rd was a pretty ridiculous prediction. Although I'm pretty sure power rankings aren't for the whole season, just current rankings. So considering that, I don't believe 3rd is quite so ridiculous.

Cullen is a clown. He has RNH as the Oilers top point getter with 36 points in 45 games.

I would hate it if the NHL doesn't start the season with a bang.

If we don't play that first day, that would be a waste of Rexall space.

Plus it will condense our schedule even more than it already is. And of course....starting against Vancouver is a terrible way to start the season. I would prefer Calgary at home.....that's for sure.

I don't blame you guys for being pissed not being able to play on opening day(IF that's true because I don't buy it) and I'm sure I'll be told to get lost but some of you are were curious about ratings so I'll chime in. The Canucks do pull in huge ratings. They beat the Leafs(only Canadian team to do so) on TSN a few times last season and get the second highest on CBC too. Last season DAL-EDM on Mar 2 got 486, 000 on TSN while the Canucks average at least 500,000+ on Sportsnet Pacific restricted to only in BC.

To compare CGY-EDM on Jan 21st last season got 920,000 on CBC. Canucks VS Columbus(of all teams) got 1.1M.

You can check out all CBC, TSN, Sportsnet ratings here http://canadiansportsfan.wordpress.com/page/68/ . It's pretty interesting. I'm sure once the Oilers are a good team they'll pull in much higher numbers but right now it makes sense.

^ Wow, didn't think that Vancouver would actually outdraw both Alberta teams. Thanks for the link.

It's not surprising. The Canucks attract a tonne of bandwagoners.
