Bennett(give him a shot)-Crosby-dupuis
Kunitz-Malkin-Neal
Jeffery/Cooke-sutter-kennedy
Tangradi-vitale-glass

Letang-despres/orpik
Niskanen-despres/orpik
Engo-martin

I really want to see Bennett play......at least in the presseason

Players better than Sergei Gonchar.

But I'll settle for Gonch if we manage to ship out Paul Martin.

I'd love it if Malkin took a contract like this:

Y1: $12m
Y2: $12m (0% VAR)
Y3: $12m (0% VAR)
Y4: $10m (17% VAR)
Y5: $7m (30% VAR)
Y6: $6m (14% VAR)
Y7: $6m (0% VAR)
Y8: $6m (0% VAR)

Y1 - Y8 VAR = 50%

Total Contract = $71m
Cap Hit = $8.875

He gets slightly higher average salary for the term to compensate him for the fact that he can't get the term Crosby got, but it is still doable for the team and within reason moving forward to fit it into the Pens plans.

Something like this for Malkin is what I'd expect:

YR1: $9M
YR2: $9M
YR3: $9M
YR4: $8M
YR5: $7M
YR6: $7M
YR7: $7M

$56M over 7 years.

Cap hit of $8m. Variance of 22.3%?

The point of bringing in Gonchar would be to fill a gap in the top 4...not create one and use him to fill it.

Martin-Letang
Orpik-Gonchar
Niskanen-Engo

wouldn't be bad...

Penguins biggest weakness last season, especially during the playoffs, was defense. Bringing in Gonchar helps nothing.

Last season Pens had the #1 offense and a top 5 power play. Gonchar is redundant, and IMO, would hurt the team more than help. Plus he makes more than Martin. I rather keep Martin and hope he rebounds.

Last year we also had Staal, Sullivan and Michalek. This is a different hockey team than last year. That said, I don't see Gonchar as a big need either. If he was cheaper maybe.

Read a quote from Shero saying a 24-26 man camp with no junior players and they don't want to leave WBS completely short-handed. I still hope to see Tangradi, Bennett, Despres, and Doumolin.

Any worry about Malkin costing too much and getting traded/ not resigned?

At this length I expect Geno will do the same thing Sid did, and wind up with the same cap number. I was thinking if it was more like 6 years, he might get a "cap raise" but I don't think so now. So that leaves Letang next season as the big re-signing, and he'll get pretty much whatever he wants. We still might trade Martin because of that but we'll see.

Well Bennett, Bortuzzo and Tangradi are scratched for todays WBS game.

Guess we know who's getting a shot.

Go Team Bennett!

Surprised but glad if he really is getting a shot. Has he been getting any PP time in WBS? Does he play on the left wall? That alone could be huge for this team.

Yes, and yes. Without him the PP there goes from "despondent" to "dead."

I think Bennett is most likely going to get the Joe Morrow treatment... let him experience the camp, play with the team for a few games, then back to WBS. They're not going to rush the kid. I can't find the post where I asked Jacob about that (he seemed to think he'd get a shot even though he's usually one of the conservative guys when it comes to taking time to develop players in WBS), but I'd be interested to hear anyone's thoughts on why the staff would be likely to give him a shot when he's so inexperienced and not fully filled out yet.

IMO Despres is as good as on the roster based on the team's comments and how well he handled himself last year as a rookie (and his inexpensive salary). Will be surprised if our D is not:

Letang, Orpik, Martin, Despres, Engo, Nisky, Bortuzzo

There's no harm in giving Bennett some regular season games if he performs well in camp. Playoff positioning is next to meaningless, just have to get in. If Bennett shows he can create offense at the NHL level right now playing with Sid, he'll be a better fit on the wing than any other in-house option come playoff time.

Can't stress how important having another guy on Sid's line that can provide some creativity will help out. When Sid is paired up with Kunitz and Dupuis, it's all on Sid to carry the puck and make plays offensively, having a guy who can lessen that burden and capitalize on teams spending so much attention on Sid will be huge.

Really rooting hard for Bennett, Tangradi to impress and stick with the big club. Especially Bennett, if he can reach his potential, can be a sick linemate for Sid.

Would love for a top 6 of..

Bennett-Crosby-Kunitz
Tangradi-Malkin-Neal

Still expect to see Dupuis with Crosby to start the year but I'm hoping. Would be great to see some skill infused on this team to play with Sid.

The cap increased.
This team had a respectable amount of cap space to begin with.
Some players probably won't be resigned or will have been dealt by then.

So no, I don't see why he can't be resigned.

Unless it means we lose someone like Jeffrey or Tangradi to waivers.

I'm not saying he shouldn't get a spot if he really does show he's ready. I'm just saying there is potential harm to it.

I don't see either of those guys being the difference between winning a Cup or not, but if, and I stress if he plays well, Bennett can provide something no other in-house option can. Jeffrey is a depth forward and Tangradi most likely will not become a legit top-6 player. If the team has to take the chance on losing one of them to waivers to find out if Bennett can play or that he's not ready and they need to acquire a wing, then they should do it. I don't think going into the playoffs with the current top-6 wings is very acceptable.

He is going to have to play out of his mind to be worth potentially losing one of those guys. He'll be able to come up as soon as we have an injury or two without having to worry about anything like that. I just don't expect him to be that game changing at this point.

Strictly hypothetical: if Fleury craps the bed again and Martin disappoints, do you use your two buyouts on them?
