I've seen Barker play, believe it or not. I'm saying that this is the reasoning for the Canucks, to try and turn his career around.

I don't believe there is enough to save that would be worth wasting a contract on. Arneil is having a hard enough time trying to make a player out of Connauton let alone Barker...but I guess we shall see how it plays out.

Can't help but think Barker is a "progress stopper" (he'll take up minutes better served by prospects that need the development time). Hope I'm wrong but it's one thing to take on a "reclamation project" (eg., Lappy) who at least shown he was a decent NHL at one point (even if it was only a bottom six forward) but another to take a flyer on a guy who has never really shown the ability to stick to a NHL dressed roster at any time to my knowledge.

The Canucks always seem to scrape the bottom of the barrel with their training camp invites. I'd be disappointed if this turns into a contract, regardless of how he looks, but for now it's not really a big deal.

I get where you - and the team - would be coming from, but it's not like the Canucks would be the first team to try this with Barker. Several teams have thought he'd be a good reclamation project only to come away disappointed. I would just be extremely trepidatious about offering him a contract. If we end up signing him, of course I'll root for him, but nonetheless.

We will, but saying what I said, I don't think he will get a contract from the Canucks. They are 2.4m under and stacked with LHDs, there's no room. Interest is just that, at this point.

Kostopolous is the only one that makes a little sense as 4th line plugger.

More or less agree, just outlining their thought process. And points for using "trepidatious" in your post.

Oh god, not Kostopolous. He's one of the worst scrappers in the NHL.

Cam Barker Do not want even for league min. What are they thinking?

I do not even want him on the Wolves. I'd rather have Ryan Parent if we are going this route of piss poor reclamation projects.

We also have Joslin who makes $105000 in the AHL. If the CBA is the same regarding waivers, i think that he is exempt from recall waivers. So we can just use him. He's actually playing well in the AHL and can actually stick on an AHL roster, unlike Barker.

Wasn't he signed and then released by the Texas Stars (AHL team) this season?
If he cant make it in the AHL, how on earth is he supposed to make it in the NHL?

maybe they are seeing if he is valuable enough to play in the AHL? With Tanev and possibly Joslin coming up, they will need to replace some dmen correct?

Vandermeer, DO NOT WANT. Terrible. Aaron Rome except 1000 times worse. Boo.

Barker, as you've all covered, seems a waste of an invite, especially with potentially no exhibition games. Seems odd.

Arnott, who is supposedly always in great shape, would be an interesting duct tape situation for our centre problem. God knows how long Schroeder will last with the team.

Players who play "pretty darn good" don't get released from tryout contracts.

I think Vandermeer does the job of both Kostopoulous and Barker, meaning he provides toughness and defensive depth. He can also play the wing if necessary, and there's no one in the league he won't fight.

He's not going to directly win us games, but he's a jack of all trades that can serve a number of roles throughout the year. Certainly a better option than Kosto or Barker.

I think he requested it. He wanted to be free for any PTO's coming his way, obviously there seems to be some interest. I mean, if we go by his stats, we should be releasing Chris Tanev and Kev. C

Just wanted to add that this doesn't exactly improve the image I have of our pro scouts (seem to be wildly inconsistant); hopefully the same scouts that recommended bringing in Barker aren't the same that will have some say into what NHLers we get for Luongo.....

He was on that #1 pairing in Texas with Max Fortunus as his partner

It didn't look good when he got beat one on one by that Davos player in Spengler Cup. Dario Burgler I think it was.

I like Arnott, depending on the price. I can't see him being worse than Malhotra. Extra size and veteran leadership never hurts.

Barker...meh. He's not a RH defenseman so I don't see where he fits here, but if we are able to dump Alberts on someone and replace him with a minimum wage Barker I wouldn't be upset. Otherwise adding our 6th LH defenseman to the roster isn't a good idea.

Kostopolous...no thanks. Never liked this guy. Same with Vandermeer.

Arnott...yeah okay. Not ideal but if he's cheap he's not a bad option.

So here's a thought: If the Canucks end up with rings at the end of this season (optimistic) does Dan Cloutier get one?

Most of these marginal guys are just invited to provide bodies for camp.

This year the more bodies the better though... so many injuries will happen.

I think most understand that; it's just with a microscopic camp, no pre season and the massive importance of coming flying out of the gates this year, why not just get your team gelling as soon as possible. Having guys competing for spots is one thing, but CB just seems like a waste of ice time for someone else who has a legitimate chance.
