Personally I think between the buyouts, the cap recapture stuff and possible trading of cap hit there might just be many more options for a Luongo trade than people were thinking even a week ago. Could be an interesting couple of weeks! A too good to be true deal may indeed come down the pipe to Gillis from an unexpected source. Still think the Caps would be crazy for not seriously considering acquiring Luongo. They are going into the season with inexperienced goaltenders and have assets to spare.
They can have their pick of Luongo or Schneider if either Voracek or Simmonds is the return. Alas, Philly is not going to throw away millions by buying out Bryz now. Stupid signing it may be.
I'm confused, isn't the number 1 reason Luongo needs to be traded because of the Canuck's high cap hit of goaltender (some of which needs to be used elsewhere). Not because the Canucks can't afford to write his cheque. How is retaining salary against cap an advantage?
I interpreted "salary/cap hit" as "salary OR cap hit", not "salary AND cap hit". If it's the latter, you and ginner classic are certainly correct. I've asked capgeek if they can clarify.

If a team like the Panthers would move a guy like Weiss, I don't think there is anyone on the Leafs team(that they're willing to give up) that matches his pedigree. He'd be a great fit until Kesler comes back, a true #2 center that could play on any NHL team.
Also, Bozak being bad defensively is just a myth. There might be bad defensive players on the leafs individually, but Bozak isn't one of them.
That's my anecdotal impression of Bozak. Stat wise its impossible to verify as he spent 85% TOI with Kessel and 60%+ with Lupul. Even if he is only avg., a) he will get better here as just about every forward who has come here has had to... and b) he will have different linemates - there's a huge difference defensively speaking having Hansen and Raymond as your linemates vs Lupul and Kessel. Anyway, little downside if he's a secondary part of deal, and some upside. More or less a Lapierre or Higgins value wise and we know how that turned out for us...plus he's a center.
From watching him, I think he's pretty average defensively. The problem is that he's a ****** hockey player, regardless of how he is defensively. His possession numbers are pathetic given that he plays with Kessel and Lupul most of the time. No interest. None.
It's not as if he's 22 either, he's 26. If we're going to acquire someone to push Schroeder out of the lineup, let's at least pick someone who is a clear upgrade.

For anyone who cares, apparently Eklund will be posting what he's heard about Luongo sometime this afternoon. Now yes it is Eklund, but hopefully he mentions something about Philly in there as I would definitely put a lot of stock into it at that point given his track record with Philly rumors.
