This is such a terrible match. So many times Almagro was two points from the match. So many times he played terribly when he had a chance to go ahead in the game and get a match point. Twice he came up with great shots to stave off break point. It was a microcosm for the set in general: he was terrified to take a lead, but played brilliantly from behind. More of the same: 15-40 chance for Nico, will he keep his perfect conversion rate? No. Unreturned serve. Yet another overhit backhand on the second - couldn't count how many of those he has had this set. A third chance to break... another unreturned serve. A fourth... another unreturned serve. A fifth... again the serve down the middle unreturned. Again he outhits Ferrer for a sixth... finally returns that serve and Ferrer misses his forehand.
How to Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth, by David Ferrer.
Nic might try coming in more--it may be easier going north/south with a sensitive groin than east/west...looks like he is playing until David gets a break, if David can ever take him up on it, that is, what a sloppy kill; regardless this is pretty gutsy on Almagro's part.
