Pernell Karl Subban's next contract

Now that we have a season, the Habs need to sign Subban. How much will he sign for?

People in the Trade's section of HF always has a fascination with completely spelling out a player's name (and those accent things too, like Selšnne has).

Anyways, I think it'll be at least 5 million per season.

I think it depends a lot on the length of the deal. I think a short term deal (1-2 years) would be around $4M. To lock him up longer term (4+ year), you're looking at $5.5+M IMO.

Agreed that it depends on the term. I don't think it's lower than 5m as long as it's more than 2 years.

This, and it sounds like the Habs are only looking 1-2 years. So if they haven't been able to get past that previously, I don't see how they do it in just a few days now.

1-2 years, $4-5M, that's what I'd expect/think was fair. If the Habs are still lowballing on their bridge offers below $4M, however, there is probably a realistic chance that we just don't see Subban.

The player doesn't even pocket the full face value, we're basically at half price now, so it splits whatever gap they had. Say you sign him $5M, he gets $2.5Mish? Habs shouldn't care about this vs. half of $4M. Really. Even if it sets the starting point for his longer term deal to come, it shouldn't be a sticking point. But I don't know that I'd be all that surprised if they can't figure it out in time.

I hope someone offer sheets him, especially Toronto or Philly.

Montreal will match but it will be good to bring some squeeze into the situation.

that would be a great contract for the Habs, i would be that Subban goes for something a bit shorter so that he can prove that he is a top defenseman in the league, then cash in. I truely believe that he will be worth much more than 5 mill but if Montreal does this it would be pretty awesome.

edti- something like the above 3 years @ 4.3 per

He made enough money doing commercials during the lockout that he'll take a home town discount.

Subban under 5 mil/year will not play in Montreal

First, Subban has an excellent agent (Meehan). Second all his comparables have signed this summer at 5M plus. Third, Bergevin has done a fantastic job so far with the Habs except for that ridiculous 2 year 2.75M/per offer, when he could have passed for a genius today had he hooked in PK for 5 years at 4M per. Fourth, Habs are stuck with two useless contracts (Gomez and Kaberle) which they had no clue if the new CBA would offer any amnesty possibilities. They now have the immediate possibility of liberating 10M on the cap. Fifth, anybody living in Montreal knows how popular PK is here, as he was very present in the after season. Combine this with the fact that all habs' fans know that this team is financially rich...the Habs simply lost their bet in PK's case and cannot afford losing him...Meehan knows that and IMO there is no way that PK stays in MTL under 5M per, regardless of length of contract.

Given the new 8-10 year CBA, some owners who really do not care about their peers will absolutely have no restraints into giving PK an offer sheet if he is not signed during the next week. Bergevin will not make the same mistake twice...Habs lost their bet and now will have to pay up.

The buyouts start this coming summer. There is no immediate cap relief.

Subban has 4 more RCA years. Mtl is one of a few teams that likes the 2nd contract, Price, Patches, Emelin, Diaz, weber, DD, all got 2 year contracts after their ELC and then got big contacts(price, patches). Singing Subban to a 4-5 year deal would be the worst thing. You try to sign him for 2 years now and them give him that long term contract.

Habs have no need of immediate cap relief, though. They've got ~$64M this year, and there's no $6.2M coming PK's way.

Next year, Gomez will be gone, one way or the other. And they'll probably have to do another move as well, not because of PK's deal, but just to accommodate other raises and openings (Desharnais raise, replacing spare part UFAs).

The only minor lingering issue would be if tagging issues are in play vs. next year's upper limit, because the Habs do already have a lot committed for next year. But the CBA will probably have some allowance for that.

I'd say 3-4 years @ $4.5m per season

Mtl have 7.4 m in cap space for this year with only Subban unsigned.

Again it's not the money that is the issue, it's the term.
