Nathan Gerbe Signed 1 Year/2 Way

http://hurricanes.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=678970

Quote:
Ron Francis, Vice President of Hockey Operations for the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with left wing Nathan Gerbe (GUHR-bee) on a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Gerbe $550,000 on the NHL level or $150,000 on the American Hockey League (AHL) level, with a guarantee of at least $250,000.

“Nathan has had success on the NHL level and should compete for a job with the Hurricanes during training camp,” said Francis.

I was just thinking the other day it would be hilarious to sign him and watch all the complaints about signing the smurfiest of smurfs. I like it though. Worst case I think he'll tear it up for Charlotte. Decent depth signing.

Little risk here, either in letting him try or sending him down to Charlotte. It's unlikely he makes a big contribution either, but that's what one would expect from a $550K 2-way contract.

Probably means Zach's going to Europe. I like the pickup, I just don't think he's any more likely to stick at the NHL level heading into camp then any of our other tweeners: Boychuk (if he comes back), Dalpe, Palushaj, etc.

If Boychuk is coming back, if we do sign either Hainsey, Morrow, or both, that could push us all the way up to 48 contracts.

The thing I like about this signing and the way the re-signing of most of our RFAs is that they give us flexibility. Most of them have been at the league minimum or just a shade over. Gives us a bit of room to work with when thinking about adding any of these other FAs to the roster knowing that any of our own younger guys that make it will take up hardly any space at all. Also, as injury call ups they won't take up much space either. Every little bit helps.

it's cheap and it's 2-way. I see no problem here

Sounds like the baby russian and possibly Boychuk are not with the Canes org this upcoming season and they are trying to fill a few holes.

Well, this one snuck up on us for the most part. The guy's like 5'5" and was used in a bottom 6 role for Buffalo. Don't mind this for Charlotte with Samson gone and maybe Boychuk.

The other plus side is, if most of these guys end up clearing waivers if they don't make the team, Charlotte's going to be ****ing STACKED up front.

Wonder if this was out "1 year cheap prove yourself contract" mystery player. His old deal with Buffalo was like $1.5m/yr.

Not sure I'd really call him a tweener either...he hasn't played a game in the AHL since '09-10. The last 3 years he's logged 168 NHL games, 29-43-72, 0.42ppg. That's twice as many games and almost 4x as many points as (for example) Boychuck has.

Can't really see a downside to this I suppose. I have some faint hope that Gerbe could work his way into a legit NHL role.

At the end with Buffalo, he was an ineffective NHLer, even when given scoring line responsibilities and PP time. He may have returned too soon from his off-season back surgery to repair the damage done to him when Bourdon boarded him in a game in Philly two years ago. He's a dedicated cuss, has legs like tree trunks from all the gym time, and it wouldn't surprise me if he is healthy to see him bounce back.

If not, he should fill the nets for the Checkers.

The Gerbe of a couple years ago is head and shoulders above the 3 I mentioned, which for someone that's 5'5 is saying something, but he was pretty brutal last year. Not saying he can't rebound, but right now I'm looking at him as yet another guy that COULD crack the lineup and show they have it but not banking on it happening.

JR really has impressed me with all these 1 year low risk high reward contracts he's been giving out. Only reason I say high reward is compared to last years depth can it really get any worse? Gerbe has the work ethic to fit right in here, glad we grabbed him.

Skinner's not a smurf.

Gerbe steps out from behind JR.

That's a smurf.

Interesting. Nothing wrong with this at all. Just creates good, healthy competition.

This guy is more Chad LaRose than the actual Chad LaRose.

At least he's cheap, but if he makes the NHL club then something has gone very much awry.

For curiosity's sake, what's your problem with this deal?

If he works out, great, we've got another option for the NHL. If it doesn't, great, we've got another option in Charlotte.

And if he completely bombs, oh well, it was 1-year and on the cheapest of contracts.

Sounds like you're complaining just to complain.

SIZE. We have to get bigger. There is no way around it. We can't establish a fore check because we're too small.

This isn't a one-way contract though. It does absolutely nothing to keep us from going out there and signing Brendan Morrow or trading for someone, it just adds depth. If he's not good enough to crack the top 9 then he'll be ripping it up in Charlotte until someone gets hurt.

If he makes the team, it'll be because he was the best player to fill the role after training camp. He's already shown he can play in the league, despite his size.

If he struggles later, we can send him down to the minors with little to no consequence.

You don't have a leg to stand on here.
