Realistic return for Luongo:

Bozak, Frattin, 2nd (2014)

edit:

or Bozak, Blacker, 2nd (2014)

I expect something like Bozak + mid level D man + mid level scoring winger/prospect coming back for Luongo.
That's not the point, there was obviously an asking price and Burke presented it and said that this isn't going to work for us. As fans we can say this will gut our franchise yadayadayada. In the end this is a business and with new owners, they want to see success. They'll make a splash if they have too.

Watch and learn. Deal structure is going to be same but there will be more coming back than Leafs are willing to admit. That I can bet on.

So LeBrun, Mirtle, Spector and Cox all reference Burke's reluctance to deal for Luongo as the breaking point, and people still think it was a style choice? C'mon.

The timing is very telling here.

Judging by some of the posts on here, I'd say the light is getting dimmer..

If that's the case then the wrong GM was fired.

agreed, and Nonis mentioned that they have to make some important team decisions quickly once they're able to start trading. To me that screams Luongo.

Yes although this is the kind of speculation that garners website views over trade speculation

Again, neither the CEOs of Bell/Rogers, nor their seconds in commands are going to get into conversations with Burke over player personnel decisions. These guys are top professionals, and fully qualified to know that they don't know what is in the best interest of the Leafs when it comes to player personnel decisions.

Those personality conflicts are all about how Burke conducts himself in the role of General Manager.

Then there's the reports from Mirtle, Cox and Spector...

This is not change for change's sake. Nonis and Burke are polar opposites in how they do things. Deals for goalies is a major aspect of that disparate methodology.
Why now? Because they don't want the Leafs playing under the Bell/Rogers ownership with Brian Burke as the figurehead.

It absolutely is change for the sake of change of representation. Nonis basically did all of Burke's personnel moves. If you want true change, you don't simply promote a behind-the-scenes guy from within. The biggest thing they did, was disassociate Burke's ego/personality from the Maple Leaf logo.

How is it a role reversal? Most Nuck's fans have been asking for the moon and most Leafs fans have laughed the whole way....no reversal.

There will be more coming back than what Burke offered, agreed...but not any of the big names I have heard Canuck fans throw around. As you said, this is a business, you don't grossly overpay for something either.

So all of LeBrun, Cox, Mirtle, Spector etc... are liars? They don't reference style as the breaking point. It may have been a factor, but not the breaking point.

Gillis is going to have to play this one smart. The ownership seems to want lu, possibly enough to remove burke just to get it done. Holding out now could see them make a panicked and overpayment trade to get the guy they want. On the flipside, with a shortened camp and the media circus luongo creates, you'd think gillis wants him out of town as soon as possible to stop any locker room divides.

Got to find a good middle ground. I think we'll see something along the lines of

kulemin+bozak+tor 1st 2013 for lu
or
kulemin+gardiner for luongo+raymond
bahahahahahahaha

The timing is very telling here.
The thing is that with Burke, I can see the final straw being something a lot more trivial than most people would expect. The guy has a real track record of being stubborn and making a stand on things that people wouldn't typically expect.

I can actually picture a scene where Burke tells his ownership group that if they want Luongo he'll drive them to the airport to pick him up.

All this isn't to say there weren't a 100 other reasons why it didn't work out for Burke, the path to his firing wasn't created in a day, but I agree that in terms of a final sticking point it does feel like a supposed Luongo deal played a role.

So you really believe that the CEOs of Bell/Rogers are going to call up Brian Burke and tell him to trade for (or not trade for) Roberto Luongo?

If some of these rumors are true, Toronto might be in for a long year.
