Agree, and with Luongo i think the thing for the Leafs to ask is -- do you see yourself contending for the cup in 4-5 years? If not, then pass. But if so -- and with UFA looming for Dion, Lupul and Kessel id consider this carefully -- i would posit that Luongo is the single most important piece you could add towards that goal. There's no Pronger out there. Weber is locked up. Goalie-wise, what are we talking about -- Bernier? How much of a sure thing is he? I guess you have to look at UFAs Getzlaf & Perry, but then all the more reason to go for it. Look at what Roberto did for the Canucks, almost immediately. We are talking about taking your goaltending from bottom 5 to top 5 instantly. You establish a culture of winning. You increase your playoff odds exponentially. You become a destination for future UFAs. You think it wouldnt make some difference in the ability to attract Perry and Getz if the guy they won gold with is there?
Or......option B.....go with reimer and scrivins, and expect more of the same ...or go for the "real" rebuild and expect anther 4-5 playoff-less years (and in either of those scenarios, how likely are Dion, Lupul and Phil to hang around...?)
And to the inevitable chorus of "why pay for an asset in decline?" i say show me one goalie in nhl hist witth Roberto's history and credentials that suddenly tanked in his mid 30s. You cant, b/c there arent any. He is as close as youll get to a sure thing for 4 years anyway. Saint teabag Timmy barely entered the league at Luo's age, and won the cup 6 years later.
I would ask if this is not, in all seriousness, worth more than some Bozak/Franson junky package.
Or maybe not. Whatever. You guys seem contented w no playoffs, so there's no convincing some....
Yours w a white wine sauce,
Nyvf

Gillis can ask for Gardiner all he wants, he's not getting him. His name even being mentioned is quite funny actually.
If Lu is in fact going to go to TO, Gardiner will definitely be the center of what's coming back. There really isn't anything else in TO to entice a trade.

Is this your opinion or do you have some sort of insider knowledge on the subject?

This thread is ridiculous. Reminds me of the Kaberle threads when he was on the block, suggesting he was only going to fetch a 2nd.

I see the problem. You don't know what the word "journeyman" means.

No he wouldn't. I have a hard time believing Burke will give up Kadri for Lu, let alone Gards.

I don't even think Burke acquires Lou, he has spent most of his tenure in toronto complaining about retirement contracts, I dont see stubborn Burke going against what he has fought so hard to eliminate in the past. Especially the consequences those contracts will give teams with the new CBA. I see Burke acquiring a goalie that hardly anybody has speculated will be traded.

Schneider has not proven he is better than Luongo. neither has Price.
What is your point?

Well, amidst the literally thousands of speculated rumours, the one that was most substantiated was that the guy who was selling the asset had asked for Gardiner, 5OA, Bozak and Frattin.

Does that count for anything? Or not so much as what the legions of armchair GMs hereabouts "know as facts" or "have a hard time believing" or "will say for certain what their gm will do?"

If luongo typically takes a month or two to get going, how much more pronounced is that going to be in a shortened season? How much does that affect his value?

Trying another, novel approach --
Ill wager that most here are fantasy nhl players. Question -- in you league, where does Luongo get drafted among goalies? Or overall? And where does Bozak get drafted? Or Connolly?
Yeah, thought so.

Using fantasy hockey rankings to prove your point is actually quite hilarious.

Works just fine when he's splitting with Cory, esp while other teams crappy backups are getting too many back-ends of back to backs and 3 in 4 nighters. Then the Canucks will be good to deal one high at the deadline to what is sure to be a longer list of teams in need.

Good luck unloading Luongo to us then.

Fair enough -- no points for creativity. We'll just stick wth what you "know" your gm will or wont do, which i agree is much less hilarious.

Well without a doubt its a lot better then using fantasy rankings. Luongo is a great Goalie dont get me wrong, but he's on the downswing of his career, signed fora long long time, and now with this cap-recapture system its definite Gardiner will not be going the other way. I'm also not saying Connolly, nor Bozak will be the main pieces either. Though who really knows until it happens or even if it does.

Hypothetically, if the Canucks took half of Luongo's cap hit/salary, what kind of offers would we be looking at? I can't imagine Gardiner/Bjugstad/etc would be off the table.

It effects his value about as much as it would if he started the season on fire. Zero change. Those teams who want Luo know how good he is. Nothing but a serious injury will change that.

Thinking this is BS now.. person has no history of breaking deals, is very anti-burke, and this was her first tweet since August.

(according to her twitter bio..) Toronto Sun columnist just tweeted this..

Jennifer Benson ‏@wordonbaystreet
Done Deal! #Luongo & Cap Flex to #Leafs. Frattin, Bozak & 2nd Rounder to #Canucks. Expect Announcement Thursday (Following Signed CBA) #NHL

Oh yes she has a long history an NHL insider and trade breaker.

I would be ok with the return tho, Canuck fans would be on suicide watch.
