The new detail here that I found interesting is that any player bought out under these circumstances CANNOT be re-acquired by that same team during the upcoming season, not by waivers, not by trade and not by free-agent signing."

So hypothetically, the Oilers could trade Horcoff for Redden from the Rags and both teams could buy them out... then they could be signed as free agents by their original teams.

I wonder if they have stipulations in the new CBA to cover those types of scenarios as well?
A fine question. It certainly breaks the spirit of the idea, I wonder if the league would allow it?

I got crucified by a bunch of posters who have since moved on to illustrious careers counting made up stats in the oilblogosphere. Good times.

Nobody could convince me that Horc is a good captain, but maybe he will surprise us and have a decent season on the ice. We could sure use it.

In that case I take back my prediction. I'm not as certain as many of you are that he'll be bought out. I haven't taken a good look at the cap numbers. If the math looks bad he'll be bought out this summer. If they can get away with another year of Horc on the payroll I think they'll keep him. This assumes, of course, that his play is still good enough to be a 3C.

Yeah, this board was very protective of Horcoff after the playoff run.

I posted shortly after Horcoff's injury, months before he got his contract stating that he wasn't a star player, and that any contract over 5 million dollars a year would be a disaster.

Got a lot of condecending posts from the blogosphere guys over that one.

You guys really need to stop treating Horcoff like cattle. How many cows voluntarily go to the auction 3 days before they are due to be sold and slaughtered.

In sure Katz is just getting some maintenance done on the private jet and thecaptainshawnhorcoff will be here on time.

I think when Horcoff was named captain, following Moreau's departure, there were basically no other options. Looking at the 10/11 Oiler roster the only guy that stands out as captain material would maybe be Penner, but he was shipped out later that same season. Hemsky was on that roster but he has never struck me as captain material either.

Fast forward a couple of years though, and the C on Horc's jersey looks like an aberration. I can think of four or five guys easily that would be better... Hall, Ebs, Whitney, Smyth... it wouldn't be the worst thing for this team if Horcoff handed the 'C' to a young guy before the season starts.

Apparently you're in the minority thinking this is a typical season.

Wonder if Messier or Gretzky or Jason Smith would have been here and greeting the new guys before camp starts and doing some team building?

If Modano can be stripped and be a team guy, anybody can. Sorry never even meant to quote you. Just mean in general. Modano happily handed it to Morrow.

I kind of fell bad for Yakupov lol

John MacKinnon ‏@rjmackinnon

Friday night in #yeg and #Oilers teenage phenom Nail Yakupov dining alone on cusp of first NHL camp. Seems wrong on team's part. No?

I thought some guys would have taken him out or most of team go out for dinner.

Neither of them should be captains IMO. Hasn't Stauffer hinted that Smyth isn't as loved by the guys in the lockerroom as you would think?

Is this seriously what journalists are reporting? Who is going out with dinner with who? How is this anything other than trying to stir the pot. Pathetic.

Based on his Twitter feed he's had a pretty fun evening. I hope that our absurd, overzealous media hasn't taken to stalking him.

Don't have a problem with Horcoff not being here.

The leaders of this team are in Edmonton. Letter on their jerseys or not.

Feel bad for Yak, didn't make any new friends? He should have his mom pack him some extra Quaker Oats granola bars in his lunch bag to share with the popular kids.

Can't wait for the kids first goal.

That picture was tweeted by a Karly Lowe and a Darby Lowe was also tagged in it. I have a feeling at least two of those girls are Kevin Lowe's daughters

MacT spotting in the back left as well
