Please realize this is like pressing the reset button.

There is absolutely no guarantees the new GM will come in and want to tank. For all we know it could be some young impressionable guy like JFJ who MLSE can "mould" which means... make him do what we want.

I'll reserve judgement until we get word on the replacement... but from the outset this looks like an awful awful move for an organization that was just starting to form an identity
If anything it's a strong indication that they'll do the exact opposite of tank and continue trying to push forward in a win now mentality because they've had a history of trying to force GMs hands into win now philosophies and it certainly seems like they tried to strong arm Burke into a move he felt was unwise.

I don't know. Just someone brought it up on habs board, figured i'd ask if it seems plausible.
First thing came to my mind too oddly enough...

Has to be more to it than we know.

No, they don't have a history of that. You're thinking of the teachers pension funder / richard peddie.

The Leafs pre-Burke had a much bleaker future than the Leafs post-Burke. The man has been improving this team, but obviously was not given enough time to see the prospects mature.

Sounds like Burke did NOT want to make Luongo deal, while many in Leafs org did. Burke a principled man.

What the hell? The timing here is awful. The new coach he just brought in barely had time to improve the team, now you're going to have a lame duck coach waiting it out until the new GM brought in his own man.

Wow.

Stunned.

When a team finishes in the basement 4 years in a row with the same significant pieces missing as before (#1 goalie, #1 Center etc.), a reset button isn't exactly the worst choice.

I'm laughing at the thought that some think this is about Luongo.

If it was, Burke would have been fired last summer.

He had full authority to make the moves he saw fit. He was the president of the team for crying out loud.

He wouldn't be fired so quickly before the start of a shorten season because he didn't acquire a player. He would have been fired this summer if the team didn't improve... but not at the beginning of the year when the Leafs have no idea how the team will do. What if they are a playoff team without Luongo? Makes no sense.

It's not about any player or Luongo. Just. Stop.
