They really didn't answer the question why did they make the move now?

Luongo got Burke fired.

Burke was all in - willing to trade 1sts/top prospects to get him - to win now.

BOG stepped in and said enough is enough - had to fire him immediately to prevent the continued destruciton of franchise.

"We were at the Marlies game together last night, and then, they told us this morning."

Nonis sounded so upset when he said this.

Change for the sake of change. As someone who was really liking the direction Burke was taking, I'm at least pleased that Nonis is taking over. But Nonis just admitted that he thinks hockey along very similar lines as Burke does, that's something a lot of people have known from the time he got hired on as Assistant GM. If Burke wasn't doing what MLSE wanted the GM of the Leafs to be doing, what does switching to Burke Jr. do but cause a media whirlwind?

It's strange, because I have faith in Nonis like I had faith in Burke, so it's hard to be fully angry since we still have a figurehead that I think I'll be able to get behind. But a lot of us have been able to see the vision that Burke had starting to unfold since he first took over here, and to make this kind of move at this time seems mind-boggling. It seems almost hilarious watching this presser and having Tom say that it was Burke's direction, etc. (as well, of course, as results in the standings) that got him canned, and then listening to Nonis talk about how similarly he thinks the game to Burke.

Hopefully this goes over well...

quote of the day:

"without getting into the specifics"

pretty much sums up this presser.

Why did it take so long for MLSE to fire Burke is really the only question that needs answers here?

Perhaps Ownership change delayed the inevitable by the corporate sale or it might have occurred earlier.

This organization is in big big trouble, that presser reminded me of the Ballard era. What a total gong show!

from presser i got basically that

Burke got fired because of his relationship with the Media not because of the team he's built or the lack of success which should have got him fired

sad

Or maybe it was the other way around?

I have a hard time believing Burke wanted to go all in again after the Kessel trade.

He's as shocked as anyone, this move makes no sense to me. If you're going with a change in direction, Nonis is a strange choice, and I imagine he knows it.

At the PC today the question was asked and Luongo had NOTHING to do with the decision was the answer.

Other way around. He was talking about how the organization is all about winning. That sounds more like a team who wants Luongo now then before.

Poor guy, maybe he should have asked for a few minutes to collect his thoughts. I'm sure ownership coached him prior to the presser.

Not going to get into the specifics of the contract, but he has full authority of the club.

Something along those lines.
