Reilly and Gardiner won't, and shouldn't, be moved. I think you could see Lupul for Luongo though. A Lu for a Lu.

I assume that he will remain a nonstarter, no matter who is running the Leafs. I still think that the deal will be around Kadri, Bozak and a 2013 2nd/2014 first.

I would be ecstatic if we got Gardiner, but I just don't think it's a good move for Toronto and I really hope that Nonis knows it too.

Bozak does help this team, no matter what some individuals may say. I personally do not trust Schroeder/Arnott to be our #2 centre until Kesler gets back and Kadri hold more value than most (outside of Toronto ) give him

When you make the decision to fire him, like Anselmi said they just recently did.

Exactly.

You keep him on as a $5m adviser or whatever... and he's a lot less likely to go on a media tirade against Bell & Rogers.

But no, now MLSE has decided Mike Gillis and the Vancouver Canucks, here you go - take what you want. We want Luongo so bad to get back playoff revenue we're willing to fire our guy to make it happen.

Talk about being bent over a barrel. And for one I am very nervous.

How anyone can paint trading for a 33 year old star goalie as not looking towards the future is simply shocking.

It really shouldn't be that difficult to understand, but Luongo is a much better player than Gardiner (for example), playing a much more important position (particularly for the Leafs). There is no reason to believe there will be a significant drop in Luongo's play for the foreseeable future.

Your future seems to be: Keep all your young players who show any kind of promise, on a losing team for an indefinite period of time ... thus gaining? Higher draft picks? Some chance at convincing free agents to join a team stuck in mediocrity?

100%, performance was cited as a factor.
When a GM is fired at this point in the year, it's clearly not about performance. They had the entire off season to do it, but now, when ramping up to the biggest trade since Phaneuf, the GM is let go. The timing disagrees with the reason given.

In the coming press conferences, it'll be expected they'll gloss over this every time in hopes the organization doesn't come off as desperate for Lu. Makes sense, expect performance based reasons to be talked about.

When the "Why now?" question comes up, should be interesting to see how it's handled.

Gillis isn't going to trade Luongo for a UFA.

Well to be fair he said he was 100% sure the ASKING price was Gardiner + Kadri.

That's different then saying Nonis agreed to it but Burke wouldn;t do it.

To follow, John Shannon [the guy guaranteeing a Lu to Toronto trade this weekend] "never heard about Gardiner in the deal."

And to boot, Damien Cox said "Gardiner has always been a target of Gillis's but personally himself wouldn't give him anything".

At which point? I watched it and do not remember them saying that. Granted, I was doing other stuff and it was on in the background but I was listening. The only mention I've heard of that today was a suggestion by John Shannon that they are button downed corporations who might prefer someone else as the face of their franchise.

Somebody has great reading comprehension!

So you've now caused a media circus, which reflects poorly on your newly acquired property, which may have been totally unnecessary had the lockout lasted a full season.

McCowan doesn't know crap, that's been established. Also Bobby Mac who actually knows what he's talking about says any trade with Gardiner is a non starter. Which is the same as it has been for a year now. It's not just Burke who knows how valuable Gardiner is to this team's future. Everyone knows.

If Gardiner is a non-starter in trade talks...

Well I suppose we can take the burden of Kessel or Grabovski from you guys

IF the canucks were to get Gardiner, I wonder if that would mean trading Edler. It sounds like Gillis isn't willing to give him the contract he's asking for, and we could get some serious pieces back for him.

The new owners took over in late August. By the time they came to a consensus the lockout had likely started. We don't have a single owner we have 3 it wouldn't have been an overnight decision.

This is just dumb. If that was the case then lots of teams, especially in Canada where the media glare is constant, would have problems getting free agents. I have yet to hear a single player say this yet people repeat it here as if it is gospel.

Whether it's said or not, preformance just isn't thrown out because of the time of year it is. He's missed the playoffs his entire tenior, is allegedly not open to paying the price ownership is for a player that will improve their short term goals several times, and this group of owners hadn't been in charge a month before the lockout...I mean it's a fine tapestry, but performance of the Leafs has to be high up the list for this firing. I mean, the team hasn't even shown improvement after being in the basement that long.

Nonis will pay more, just about everyone talking about this change of leadership can agree on, but the initial deal was/is, and what we consider "more"...that's where the disagreement lays.

Yeah, because nobody in history has ever used the media to spread misinformation as a negotiating tactic before

"5 years contract limits. This is the hill we will die on."
