Awesome. So they weren't lying about increasing payroll after all.

82 is an outstanding number.

Simon makes a change

Quote:
At 6-foot-2, 263 pounds, Simon worked at both weak side and strong side linebacker during the North team’s first practice of the week on Monday.

“Going to outside linebacker is a challenge for me,” Simon said following Monday’s practice. “I’m looking forward to it. I’ve done a lot of similar (things) in the past, but there’s some differences in the coverages. I’m working on that every day and trying to improve. They’ve got me as a 'Sam' linebacker right now. There’s still some times where I’m on the ball, attacking tight ends, but then, on third down, there’s some droppage that I’m going to have to continue to work on.

“You’ve just got to be mentally and physically prepared, and just stay focused, day-in and day-out. It’s a big challenge. A lot of us here are doing that, moving around to different positions, and it makes you probably a better prospect to NFL scouts if you have more capabilities.”
Quote:
With performances like the one against Nebraska, Simon feels his best attribute is his “non-stop motor.”
“I think that’s one of the most important things in a football player and if you can play through the whistle, game-in, game-out, day-in, day-out, you can’t beat that,” Simon said.

I'm not willing to give the Nuttings credit for money that other teams are spending but 68.5 is a heck of a lot more reasonable than 45 or whatever they said their limit was a few years back. I don't see any reason why the Pirates can't be in the same range as the other small market teams in their division - which is to say 75-95 on a regular basis.

I've been calling for this team to just get to $70 million for years as a perfectly reasonable low-end amount for a team in this market, and by the time things finish we're certainly to hit that finally.

There just is no excuse for this team to not be spending this much money every year. It's sad that this can be seen as huge progress, but that is a huge increase over even a year ago. Now it just remains to see if increased revenues will mean that number keeps going up. Re-signing McCutchen was a huge stepm but there was no reason to not get it done since no one else on this team deserved the money he does (and Cutch's agent should probably get fired for negotiating those terms...Washington's closer will make more each of the next two seasons than McCutchen will at any point these next 7 years), the real question will come when guys like Cole and Taillon or whoever is up for their next deal. Pitchers cost far more than batters on average. This team has to commit to at least one of those pitchers long-term.

Milwaukee has been in that $80-$100 million range for a while...they're taking a few steps back now because that was stretching the limits of that market, but there is absolutely no reason why Pittsburgh shouldn't be in that range every single season.

In 2012 it remains the 5th lowest payroll in baseball, pretty much same as it always was. I guess you can give him minor credit for getting to 5th place from the bottom for the first time in ten years. But I am not sure if that is reason to say 'whoooooa buddy, you must have been drinking when you authorized that payroll big spender.'

http://www.stevetheump.com/Payrolls.htm

2012 5th lowest
2011 4th lowest
2010 lowest
2009 3rd lowest
2008 4th lowest
2007 4th lowest
2006 4th lowest
2005 3rd lowest
2004 3rd lowest
2003 13th lowest
2002 7th lowest
2001 12th lowest
2000 4th lowest
1999 5th lowest
1998 2nd lowest

You're such a ******, haha.

That's not the current 2013 payroll....they'd be 13th lowest on that list as it stands, right up with cincy.

You can't expect much more than 82 mil worth of players in our market...I don't care that we're only "paying" 68 mil of it.

Yeah, the idea behind watching the payroll is that it is only one factor in judging the development and growth of the team.

How come everybody got upset when Wes Welker's wife said something truthful about Ray Lewis? The guy IS NOT a role model.

Society in general seems to hate the truth these days.

Hey! You can't talk negative about Ray Lewis, the man is such an angel. Just listen to how much he talks about God before and after every game. I refuse to think he is a bad person just because he killed one guy outside of a nightclub. I mean really, who hasn't committed a murder or two? It's OK as long as he feels bad.

This season makes me so sick so I'm actually considering not to watch the Super Bowl for the first time in my life, especially after Harbaugh ending.

2 things.

1. I know it wont happen, but Revis and the Jets are rumored to be parting ways as the Jets don't think they can give him his big pay day. I know the Steelers can't either, but it would be cool if he took the hometown discount. He won't.

2. I know what position the Steelers are taking in the first round this year.

Quote:
“Defensive linemen are a premium in this league,” said Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert, “and so if you want to have a good defensive line, you do have to invest higher picks."

They had a whole montage on the Lane dunk during the last Pitt game.

I remember it very well. Sean Miller got an assist on that dunk. He's currently a head coach for Arizona.

OK, I am getting beyond drunk after watching that crappy excuse for a Pens' game. So, this seemed appropriate. It may not seem as much tomorrow morning.

Q: What does an Pittsburgh Pirates fan do when his team has won the World Series?
A: He turns off the PlayStation 3.

Q: If you have a car containing a Ohio State QB, a Ohio State WR, and an Ohio State Running back, who is driving the car?
A: The cop.
