New York is no hockey town, horrible ratings.

But Rangers are boring and Islanders so maybe that's part of it.

Not really...

10% of Chicago watching is a lot more than 10% of Pittsburgh watching.

Pittsburgh doesn't have a stake in this series and is further removed from these teams being in the Eastern Conference. What is Detroit's excuse for not watching?

Last year's opening weekend on NBC:
PIT/PHI: 2.3 on Sunday
WSH/BOS: 1.5 on Saturday
NSH/DET: 1.5 on Saturday
That's certainly not very good, although PIT/PHI was certainly a bit of a dream matchup.

It's not bad either. Boston/Washington and Philadelphia/Pittsburgh were great matchups for NBC. There was also more buzz last year in general due an uptick in playoff "violence".

Chicago/Minnesota is the best of the lot for the first round...though I expected NYR/Washington to do better. The games are still a nice bump from 2010 and 2011.

Last night's game peaked at 12. That's all I've found so far.

I can confirm this. It only got a 1.4, which tied Denver for the lowest among rated markets. (3.8 nationally)

Sure, its kind of a lousy first round from a marketing standpoint this year, but there still should be some year-to-year gains. You can't tell me that the Predators-Wings matchup last year was the pinnacle of excitement

I don't disagree, I was just putting things in perspective. Game 3 of Philadelphia/Pittsburgh last year getting a 2.3 is an anomaly in the grand scheme of things. Big hockey market in Philadelphia versus Pittsburgh, who has a national following due to Crosby, was a dream matchup for NBC...then you add brawling aspect into things.

I forgot how well Detroit/Nashville did, but then again I'm not surprised given how Detroit has a national following and you had the head slamming incident with Weber that garnered national attention because there was no suspension handed out by the NHL.

You mean what reason they have that Chicago and Pittsburgh don't?

A baseball team that's worth watching for starters...

Wow no kidding!

It's still freaking insane numbers for the NHL. You probably cant' find anything close to that in the states.

And what about Minneapolis, you seem to have forgot to mention them, which is more similar size that Pittsburgh. We can just call you a hater or jealous, not sure which category you fall into.

Even with the close rating the Twin Cities had about 50,000 more households watching than Pittsburgh.

Uh what are you talking about? NY is a great hockey town, you are comparing first round with second round ratings.

Game 6 of the Nuggets/Warriors first round NBA playoff series — won by the Warriors to clinch the series victory — earned a 6.31 rating on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area Thursday night, the network’s highest rated Warriors telecast ever. Keep in mind the game also aired on TNT. Overall, the Warriors/Nuggets series averaged a 4.74 rating on CSN Bay Area, with each game having also aired on a national outlet.
Yes Warriors on CSN Bay Area, while Sharks are on CSN California, but the difference is staggering. I'm sure the Sharks ratings have increased from Game 1 to 3, but I doubt anywhere near the 4.74 average for Warriors first round, let alone the 6.31 for Game 6. Hard to even imagine the Sharks pulling a 6.31 for local ratings of SCF games with them in it.

Now yes the Warriors have their first playoff berth since 06-07, but I'm not sure it means if they become a perennial playoff team that they would see these numbers dip.

The 1.6 in NY is so impressive. first of all, it's not the NYR, it's the NYI. also, the NYK were playing a huge game at the same time.. A 1.6 in NY is huge. And those 1.6 were in for a great treat. Did anyone see that game?? Damn... what a game it was.. It had it all.. Even MIN's 9.6 is awesome. But too bad they never were in the game. And SJ's 3.6 is also great. Almost got Warriors numbers there. And we shall not forget, SJ has the 6th biggest market in the U.S. even bigger than BOSTON...so 3.6 is more than great.

Kind of surprised it didn't do more than 3.6, I wonder what the peak was in the OT.
