I'm assuming that was across the entire area that Root Sports Pittsburgh telecasts in.
(map of the coverage when it was FSN Pittsburgh, but I don't think it has changed much, if at all, since the switch)
A 6.7 in Pittsburgh definitely isn't 210,000+ television sets. That ~225k number is a 19.4.
Absolutely amazing that Pittsburgh can broadcast to that much area and New Jersey isn't even allowed to broadcast in the entire state. I am only commenting on area, not potential number of HH.
The Bruins-Rangers game, which went to overtime and was overall a pretty great game, drew 956,000 viewers, the best-ever for NBC Sports Network, VERSUS, or OLN for a regular season game. The previous record was set on opening night of the 2011-12 season, when Flyers-Bruins drew 874,000 viewers on Oct. 6.
The game also drew an 0.5 rating among adults 18-49, putting it among the top cable programs of the night. In fact, only ESPN's broadcast of Miami's stunning upset over Duke in college basketball drew a better rating among young adults, hitting an 0.6.
Great to hear, and that shocks me because Blues are not really that loaded up with talent and excitement. They are a defensive team that plays a lot of 2-0 games. Now Pittsburgh is lucky as hell, they have the 2 best players in the world in Sid and Malkin, they have won a cup recently, are always good and they even had the best ever in Mario for a long time and won many cups with them. Imagine if STL had all those players?? my god... i can just imagine where STL would be today. I hope they get a real star one day. And finally, it shocks me stl doing this good and caring because the Cards are so so big in STL, they win world series, they are competitive and i know STL is the biggest baseball town in the U.S.. so i am shocked they even thought of hockey.
I should have said Winning.
We had the glamor offense. Remember Brett Hull? I believe he is the 3rd highest goal scorer all time
We are actually more of a Defense-man proud fan-base.
Blues fan's want effort, fore-checking, back-checking, strong PK, and exciting transition game, and winning obviously.
Buy Star players are not required for popularity. Only Effort and winning.
FYI on the Chicago game:
Quote:
Although there was a dip on Tuesday for their 3-2 loss in Chicago, the rating (6.2) was the third-best for an FSM Blues regular-season game.
Ratings for Thursday’s game are not yet available, but the trend though three games is strong. The average rating for the those games was 6.5, more than triple the 2.0 figure at the same point last season.
omg frivilous, you just brought back some great memories for me. i remember being a teenager in the 90-91 season, and seeing Hull play with Oates and omg, what a duo those 2 were.. hull got 86 goals and Oates had 115 pts in only 61 games. i'll never forget cause i was in a big hockey pool with my buddies and i had Hull and Oates and i won that pool because of those 2. there was no internet back then, but oh how i remember the highlights on tv and seeing every highlight of Oates feeding Hul each time. i swear it seemed like every night, Hull 2 goals 2 assists, and Oates 5 assists.. great memories.
I wonder how the ratings were in STL those days. probably huge cause man these 2 were fun to watch. deadly offence STL had. those were the days.

I'm pretty sure that is not accurate.
FSN Pittsburgh may be receivable in all those areas, but that does not mean that the Penguins have broadcast rights in all those areas. Two different things that don't necessarily overlap.
For instance, the Penguins do not have broadcast rights in Chautaqua County, NY. That is part of the Sabres broadcast territory.
Usually when an area receives a channel but is not within the that team's broadcast territory, those games are blacked out. Western NY receives MSG, but Rangers, Islanders, and Devils games are blacked-out.
So much for boycotts and fan apathy. The NHL reports that average per-game announced attendance is up 6.6 percent, or more than 1,000 fans per game, through the first 49 games of this season compared to the first 49 last season.
Not only have the fans come back with a vengeance, filling almost every NHL rink to capacity, but they’re watching on television in record numbers as well. NBC’s opening-weekend games (Chicago in Los Angeles and Pittsburgh in Philadelphia) were the most-watched regular-season games, outside the Winter Classics, in 14 years. Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Chicago reported record local ratings. NBC Sports Network’s offering of the Boston-New York Rangers tilt on Wednesday drew 956,000 viewers, the biggest single regular-season-game audience in the network’s history and the most-watched regular-season game on cable since 2002. An incredible 27 percent of the Canadian population tuned in to the Montreal-Toronto season opener. Boston, St. Louis, Minnesota, Dallas and Florida also reported significant spikes in viewership for their local broadcasts.
great post, LadyStanley. now that's the kinda stuff that makes me smile. keep em coming.
I'm sure you can add San Jose as getting tons of interest. that place was rocking last night, and it was sold out and the whole sports section was about them and of course the Niners. they've gone hockey crazy in SJ. at one time last night, 4 of the 10 twitter trending topics worldwide was about Sharks..i love it. also, i am surprised they mentioned Dallas getting more fan interest. i was so mad yesterday watching that DAL/CHI game. when i saw all those empty seats in the bottom (and there were tons too).. it bothered me a lot. here we have the best and most exciting team and big name city in their building, and DAL also doing good, and the place empty?? they don't deserve a team there, nor Phoenix who fill 60% to capacity. The rest thus far are doing great.
TORONTO (January 24, 2013) – Overnight data from BBM Canada confirms that last night’s NHL ON TSN match-up featuring Toronto @ Pittsburgh was watched by an average audience of 1.4 million viewers – the network’s most-watched regular season NHL game since 2009.
Overall, nearly 4.8 million Canadians watched some part of the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
i noticed today was a quiet day on the ratings front. we ddn't discuss many...there were some real doozies last night. for example, is there any way to find out what they got in Chicago for that great game. how about in Philly? what was them and the NYR local ratings? how about in STL?? i'd love to know if they got over a 6.0 again.. and last one, this one is not that important, but if any of you see it, can you post the LA game? would love to know if anyone in LA cared about this game? i predict 0.4 in LA. even though there were no lakers.

There's also a ton of overlap. Many markets overlap and have numerous local sports networks. I went to a tiny little college in Central Pennsylvania as a freshman and received both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia sports channels without blackouts. It's like that throughout basically all of Central Pennsylvania.
And it should be noted that there's basically no one living in Central or Western Pennsylvania outside of the Pittsburgh metro area anyway. The entirety of Western Pennsylvania has fewer than 4 million people in it, or about 2 million less than Philadelphia's metro area.
Here I get both Kings and Ducks games with no blackouts. I think MSG is driving those types of blackouts more than anything.

I do wonder about the ratings the Sharks get but they're always so hush hush about it. I doubt there's a significant spike TV wise.
I don't know about always, but they seem to only put out numbers when they set their records for regular season telecasts. I'd be VERY interested to know the local CSN-CA ratings for the Sharks/Flames season opener (not to mention the home opener), given that it started right after the Niners won the NFC title.

Chicago, IL (January 28, 2013) – Comcast SportsNet, the television home for the most games and most comprehensive coverage of the 6-0-0 Chicago Blackhawks, delivered its highest Blackhawks regular season rating ever last evening (January 27) -- a 6.31 household rating for its live coverage of the Blackhawks home ice battle against the division rival Detroit Red Wings.

Overall, 1.6 million Canadians watched some part of the thrilling Eastern Conference showdown on Sportsnet East, with audience levels peaking at 772,000 viewers as Sidney Crosby prepared for his shot on Craig Anderson during the shootout.
The 441,000 average audience marks a 32% increase over the previous Ottawa Senators highest audience of 335,000 viewers recorded during a game between the Sens and Toronto Maple Leafs on January 17, 2012. The record audience is also 72% above the current season Senators audience average of 257,000.
Really interested in reading about ratings, please keep them coming! Are there any specific websites that post this information? I never know where to look.
Interesting that the media reporting numbers: awful lot of "record breaking", "best ever", "best since (enter year here)". You'd think by reading that NHL discovered some magic cure for ratings by the way the media writes it.

I couldn't have said it better, buddy. I wanted to make the same post, but was hesitant. Glad you said it. I am obsessed with ratings. I want to know them all. i too have looked at every site and searched google for hrs, and can never find the present or past ratings ever. I swear i have refreshed this page that's on my bookmark maybe 433 times in the last 48 hrs and i hardly see any new post. I hope this thread stays alive and never dies. I want to know every tv rating. I hope people will contiune to post them. i especially am curious about philly, bos, chi, stl, nyr and la.. all the big market teams. in fact, i want to hear them all. i hope someone posts the LA game yesterday in LA area. i am so curious about that one cause there was nothing at all on. no Lakers, no clippers, not even 1 nba game. i so hope to see a 4.0 or higher.
Thanks guys and pls keep posting any ratings you get.
There's a SBN blog, "Puck the Media" which collects a lot of the ratings. Other than that, you'll have to start perusing the entertainment industry sources.
