So, Kovy is the CAPTAIN of a team in his home country in which he's basically a national icon and beloved. He's been a major contributor for the team all year long and competed to help his team earn the #1 seed in there conference and what would be an eventual playoff berth. Considering quotes and efforts from Medvedev, Kasatonov, Fetisov, and others, he's clearly having a gigantic amount of pressure placed on him to stay....and...people expected him to be like, "Later, losers!" Instead of "it's been real, and I'd like to stay, but I can't."
Kovy essentially said the same thing you say when backing out of a party you don't want to be at/attend..."Damn, I'd love to stay/come, but I have a prior engagement." Except in Kovy's case that prior engagement is a 15 year $100M contract, and 20,000 square foot mansions being built.
Kovy ain't here after the first couple days of camp, I'll worry.
He's just trying to make 2 fanbases happy, that's the way I see this. I can respect that. He's going to play in the ASG, say basically "guys I would truly love to stay the whole year, I love it here and you've all been great, but I have to go back to the NHL" Russian fans will understand and applaud what he's done for them, then he's going to come back here and dominate like he always does.
I've been a little mis-informed, apparently, but in regards to the "top pick" if Kovalchuk doesn't return...don't we have to forfeit that next season because of his contract? Is that being swept under the rug w/ the new CBA? Why didn't we forfeit it this past draft drafting so late?
Apologies if this has been addressed, I just don't keep up with the team as much as I used to.
Many players return in the NHL very quickly. People here in Russia, it was not pleasant. The next time these players so well no longer be met. Kovy wants to be loved here and then return to the NHL.
I think so.
I love Kovy as a talent, one of my favorite players in the NHL...
However, I took away something completely different from that quote. It basically means, I want to stay in Russia, but my NHL contractual obligations are forcing me to leave and play back in the NHL.
Are you happy with having a player that technically would rather be somewhere else?
That's what I took from that quote too, that he will be back in NJ but only because he has to or feels so and would rather stay in Russia. I just want this to all end. I'm pretty gullible when it comes to this stuff.
Zach Parise has turned the Devils fanbase into a paranoid mess. Kovalchuk being kind to his Russian fans, maybe for the last time as a hockey player, is such a disgrace...
That's a tough situation to deal with. You don't need to be a North American to be a huge patriot. Kovalchuk is and that's obviously underestimated on this board. But figuratively, there's plenty of chivalrous ways to break-up with someone you don't want to hurt. Kovalchuk is just being a gentleman.
Give Salvador the captaincy too. That won't change anything. Kovalchuk already proved who is the true Captain of this team last year. And this guy is coming back after Sunday's farewell party
It's all about the audiance these quotes were intended for and that should be obvious that he is trying to soften the blow for the KHL fans who have seen all of the stars bail. Stop reading into these quotes like it is jabs at the Devils or the NHL he will be back and ready to go following the All Star Game.
Yeah I just saw that, and came to see if it was posted here yet. It's gotta be Patty. Just because he said ''Prominent'', and I didn't think it was Marty since he's pretty laid back. I figured Patty or possibly Bryce, but I'm heavily leaning towards Patty. Small chance it's Zajac.
