If we including goaltending in the definition of "defense" than yeah, Rangers win out easy. If we take just the defenders, then I'd pick the Devils.
There's no drop after McDonagh and Girardi. Staal is arguably better defensively than both of them. The Rangers top 3 is easily better than anything the Devils have right now. MDZ is our 4th best and probably equal to the Devil's best.

After the top 4 the Rangers have a massive drop off, mostly because they don't have a number 6, but that top 4 is overwhelming.

I like the Devils defense because it's deep and I'd still put them top 10 in the league but they can't challenge an elite top 4.

Rangers for sure
When did Gaborik have a 96 point year?

Elias is so underrated on these boards it isn't even funny..

Which team went to the Stanley cup finals? Please remind me...

By that "logic" Williams and Brown are way better than Kovalchuck and Elias.

Typical sad HFboards.

Elias' 96 point season was a million years ago. This is for right now.

A 7 game sample size does not determine who the better team is overall.

I'm not trying to take anything away from the Devils. They were better in that series, they earned their spot in the finals as such, and that's all that matters.

But a few games is an extremely poor way of determining the better team in the greater scheme of things.
