I got into the 15th or so, and they were uselss for me.

Once I drafted Drouin and Shields(goalie) in 2013, had Backlund as a center, three young d-men or so, got Rattie and Mackinnon in about year 6. Pretty well after that.

We were a consistent 25-30th pick from year 3 on.

Trade #2:

BUF: Marcus Kruger+2013 1st
CHI: Mikael Grigorenko

So, I'm tight on picks for the draft, but have my team, IMO, in a good spot. Might hafta do a partial sell at the draft to score some picks.

Who are the steals in the '13 draft? I've seen Dubeau be a franchise G in the older roster updates...same here? Typical to CHI, I'm hurting for prospects in net in particular.

In the latest roster update, I drafted Charlie Millen (20yo goalie) top 5 in 2013, and he came out ~56 overall with 5 star potential. Not sure how he pans out yet, but he's been playing surprisingly well in the AHL (as a backup) given his fairly low attributes. 4-1-0 so far with a .923sv% and 1SO.

In season three as the Leafs GM, Toronto finished 3rd place in the East with a 43-32-7 record. The turning point in the season was when Joe Thornton was dealt to rival Boston at the NHL Trade Deadline.

In the first round Toronto took on the 6th seeded Washington Capitals and for the second year in a row exited the playoffs early, losing 4-2. The Nashville Predators won the Stanley Cup over those same Capitals in six games, with Pekka Rinne winning Playoff MVP.

Going into year four:

James van Riemsdyk (87) Joe Colbourne (83) Phil Kessel (88)
Joffrey Lupul (84) Nazem Kadri (83) Bobby Ryan (86)
Ryane Clowe (82) Rich Peverley (80) Jarome Iginla (84)
Steve Ott (80) Jay McClement (79) Carter Ashton (78)
Dion Phaneuf (88) Jake Gardiner (87)
John-Michael Liles (83) Morgan Rielly (86)
Andrej Sekera (83) Johnny Boychuk (81)
Mark Owuya (85)
Thomas Greiss (76)

Be A GM Mode - Starting with Dallas Stars - Level Superstar - Injuries On (Except for the pre-season) - All trades, waivers on - The 21st Jan Roster Update with own tweaks, mostly to goalies and prospects.

BRIAN BURKE FIRED (LATE JULY 2012)

Brian Burke has been fired as president and GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. It is speculated that the new ownership weren’t overly fond of Burke’s abilities which led to Burke and also his assistant, Dave Nonis, getting the boot. The move appeared to catch everyone by surprise, including Burke, who had logged into his Twitter account a day earlier to write about how he was closing in on Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo.

“This was a good time to do this (to fire Burke),” Tom Anselmi, president and COO of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment, said in a news conference following the announcement.

JOE NIEUWENDYK ANNOUNCED AS NEW MAPLE LEAFS GM (AUGUST 2012)

Joe Nieuwendyk has been named Toronto’s 14th general manager. Nieuwendyk served as the GM of Dallas Stars since May 31, 2009. Nieuwendyk has previous experience of the Maple Leafs organization, having served as a special assistant to the now unemployed Brian Burke before he became GM in Dallas.

“I am ready for this opportunity,” said Nieuwendyk. “The Maple Leafs have built a losing tradition over these lean years and I want to help them get out of it.”

MIKE MODANO IS THE NEW DALLAS STARS GM (LATE AUGUST 2012)

Ex-Star player and captain, Mike Modano has been named the successor to Joe Nieuwendyk in the role of General Manager in the Stars organization.

“I appreciate the opportunity obviously from Tom Gaglardi to have a chance to be back with the organization. I just appreciate the opportunity.” said Modano in the midday press conference. “Being a GM gives you a different perspective, just the economics of sports. It opens your eyes to a lot of things that have to take place to operate and run a game. Day-to-day operations are hectic.”

“He’s the Wayne Gretzky of Dallas. He’s the Wayne Gretzky of US Hockey,’’ Gaglardi said. “I’m just so elated that Mike’s coming on board. I don’t think that we can be successful in this market without Mike being part of it.”

(I copy-pasted stuff from the internet and tweaked the quotes)

MODANO AND GAGLIARDI DISCUSS THE ROSTER POST TRAINING CAMP (SEPTEMBER 2012)

MM: "I hope you ain't hoping me to succeed with these rosters Tom-Tom. Not only do we lack depth and skill in defensive side but our Center depth is atrocious. You know Tom-Tom, you can't win 'em games with Vernon Fiddler as your 2nd C."

TG: "I know Mike, I won't be dissapointed if we don't make the playoff, and rest assured Mike, you won't be fired. After all, your the US Wayne Gretzky, but better looking! But maybe we should strive for 38 wins."

MM: "38 wins! Tom-tom, what did you smoke this morning! ... Alright then, 38 wins it is, the target, but you better let me makes some trades then. In fact, why don't I call that Philly GM, that Holmgren guy, to see if they want Robidas since Pronger decided to retire. Maybe he bites on it? I feel Brayden Schenn could be available, might also throw that gingerkid, Eakin, into the deal if Holmsy wants to."

TG: "That's a good idea."

I'm looking for a good 1st line winger to play along with Zetterberg and Kesler, any suggestions?

EDIT:

Current line is Zetterberg - Kesler - St. Louis but as i play all the games, St. Louis just doesn't really feel like he fits there.

Rebels Clinging to Play-off Spot

I don't have a new picture... and this one is just hilarious.

At least they've got a flair for a dramatic.

With a game against the Bruins' new netminder Mike Smith last night, the Halifax Rebels were tied for 8th in the East, and risked finding themselves outside of a play-off position for the first time all season.

This hard-fought defensive game was tied with goose eggs through the first two until a bad neutral zone turnover by Ty Wishart left Milan Lucic all alone for the first goal of the game 10 minutes into the third. The Rebels looked down and out after Jesse Joensuu took a questionable goalie interference call late in the period, until after the ensuing dump to the Bruins' end on a Rebels face-off win, Smith handled the puck outside of the trapezoid behind the net and took a delay of game call. With Joensuu just coming out of the box and flying down into the corner, he found Oskar Osala in front of the net who just managed to tip it between Smith's legs with a minute to go in the 3rd to force overtime.

The game appeared destined to end in a draw until Ty Wishart made up for his prior gaff. With a minute left again to go in the overtime frame, he found the puck wide open at the point, took two steps in, and blasted a shot high over Smith's glove hand for the thrilling 2-1 victory.

Notes: Boston acquired Mike Smith right before the deadline, and then wanted to ship him to the Rebels for Rhett Rhakshani and a 2nd round pick. I tried talking them down to a 3rd round pick with no luck, and let the deal go. No doubt Jonas Hiller felt good besting him this time around.

With the victory, Halifax is now sitting in 6th with 77 points with just 7 games to go, with Montreal, Winnipeg, and Carolina sitting in a tie for 7th at 75 points.

John Tavares still leads the team with 35 goals and 36 assists. Milan Michalek has 23 goals and 25 assists, and Alex Edler actually has 2 more points than Ales Hemsky.

Around the league, Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby are all tied for the scoring title with 85 points. Nugent-Hopkins and Eberle are still sitting 3 points back in 4th and 5th.

i just made a trade reimer has been slumping and playing too much because crivens cant handle the back up role. i play everygame and about a week after the allstar game i needed to get help so....

Tor: Mike Smith and their 2013 first (currently out of playoffs)

Phx: Scrivens and two future second rounders

now i can balance the goal-tending which should help the team

I am currently in my first year with the Oilers. I have also been playing every single game, would you guys recommend this? Or should I be simming a few here and there?

Anyways I am currently 11-9-4. Started the season 7-2 and have kind of been in a slump ever since. My offense has been non-existent, except for last game when I exploded for 5 goals (Horcoff had 4).

I have shaken up the lines a bit, but still non-productive. I am looking at making some trades.

I'm willing to trade Whitney, Hemsky, Smyth and possibly Gagner if I can get something back in return.

What are some realistic trades I should consider?

Thanks guys

I'd say that's an entirely personal decision: you'll find folks here who do a mix of all sorts of different things!

I think I'll stick with playing every game because I'm the type of person that doesn't really ever play more than 1 full season in a sports game.

Still wondering about some trades though! I'd like to hear from anyone else with an Oilers franchise.

I'd either get yet another TFW or a PFW. Perry? If you can't afford him, Hartnell? Or Backes.

So I ended up trading away Hemsky and some no-name defenseman from the AHL for Jarome Iginila. Flames had him up on the trade block, so they accepted it in a heartbeat.

Threw him on the line of Yak and Gagner. Top line has finally come together as Nuge got a hat-trick last game. Currently on a 8 game winning streak, and scoring lights out.

EDIT: On a more awful note, Justin Schultz got nailed and limped off one game. Out 2 MONTHS with a broken leg. Called Teubert up and have him with Whitney so the defense lines are juggled up a bit. Has been working since though.

2012-2013 NHL SEASON (OCTOBER 2012 REPORT)

RECORD: 3-5-1

NOTABLES: Kari Lehtonen got injured very early on so I called up Jack Campbell from Texas. Jack got to play 3 games in total (game no 6-8), winning two of them when Bachman failed to deliver in Kari's absence.
D Jamie Oleksiak has been superb and he is not going down even though he is only 68 ovr.

Anyone ever have any experience with Sean Monahan, Anthony Mantha, or Oscar Dansk?

Have those three in my Blue Jackets dynasty, just entering my second off season. Also have Murphy still, traded for Jaskin. Couple other youngins. Pretty good young core.

Depends on what roster your using. In the latest update Monahan and Mantha didn't jump up in OVR fast, they still had good trade value though. Not sure on Dansk. Jaskin also was a slow developer.

RECORD (Overall): 14-9-1
RECORD (November): 11-4-0

NOTABLES: Stars are currently on a 7 game win streak and haven't lost since NOV 15. The top line of Benn-Roy-Eriksson have been ripping it up with Eriksson now having scored 14 goals for the season. So, I started another Leafs GM mode.

Im doing a full rebuild. I have 7 first rounders in total for the next two years.

Anyways, its deadline day and here is some of the deals.

ANA: McDonagh
NYR: Perry

NYR: Chara, Pete Vandermeer
BOS: Mcilrath, St.Croix

BUF: Alfredsson, Neil, Sopel
OTT: Mark Pysk, Corey Fienhage

Some crazy deals going down.

And the Rangers wanted to essentially get rid of everyone.

Del Zotto
Girardi
Hagelin
Krieder
Boyle
Gaborik
Richards
M.Staal

And I made a Del Zotto, NYR 1st for Franson deal.

So you aren't going for realism?

Rangers did make some good trades before your trade...

McIlrath (who just goons it up in my dynasty)

Added Perry up front, now have NASH, GABORIK, PERRY for top 4 wingers.
Swapped McDonagh for CHARA.

Rebels Getting Hot, and Just in Time

Oskar Osala celebrates the first goal of the game in a 4-1 win over the Flyers

The Rebels can't start booking play-off flights just yet, but with 4 games left in the season, they're a heck of a lot closer.

With four straight wins, 2-1 over the 3rd to last Bruins, a 3-0 shutout of last place Ottawa, a thrilling and dangerous 4-1 victory over the 1st place Leafs (see "Notes" below for more info), and their most recent 4-2 victory over the Flyers, Halifax is now sitting in 5th place with 83 points, 5 more than 9th place Montreal.

"We're all getting hot at the right time," said captain John Tavares. "Jonas has been outstanding in net, every line is working full-tilt, and we're going to keep it going until we get that "x" by our name in the standings."

This is all notwithstanding the fact that the Rebels currently have 3 regular defencemen out with long-term injuries. Matt Gilroy's broken jaw is expected to keep him out for about another month, Matt Niskanen's broken wrist will require nursing for what looks like the remainder of the season and play-offs, and Mikko Kousa is out for even longer after taking a skate to the forearm. The Bridgeport Tigers' top defensive line is now a line of its own with the big club, and thus far, they've held their own.

Tavares has been on fire, lighting the lamp 4 times in as many games and adding to his career high goal total of 38, and Alex Edler's impressive defensive play has made up for the lack of depth on the blue line so much so that he has been awarded with Gilroy's "A." Halifax still has to face off against the 2nd place Penguins, the 8th place Hurricanes, second-to-last Capitals, and the Flyers once more to close the season, but this locker room looks as confident as ever.

--- Notes from Around the League ---

As mentioned, the Rebels game was disastrous for the 1st place Leafs. Phil Kessel, the team's leading scorer, took a questionable hard hit from Edler in the 2nd period, and immediately crumpled to the ice, holding his head. The Leafs announced this morning that he may miss the entire play-offs with a concussion. Vezina candidate James Reimer was also surprisingly diagnosed with a severe hamstring tear that has ended his season as well. Replays aren't actually clear when the injury took place, but Toronto will now be left without its top scorer and all-star goaltender for their Stanley Cup run.

Similar bad news for the New York Rangers, who are 5 points out of 8th with 5 games to go. Henrik Lundqvist is out for the remainder of the regular season with a fractured collarbone, which might all but end their play-off hopes.

Although only two teams have locked up play-off spots in the East this late in the season, the Western Conference picture is almost set. 6 teams have punched their ticket including the surprising Calgary Flames, who have rebounded from being the worst team in the league last season, as Columbus, Los Angeles, Edmonton, and Nashville fight it out for the last two spots.

Jordan Eberle has come out of nowhere with 8 points in his past 4 games to take over the top spot in the race for the Art Ross with 89 points, 4 points ahead of the 4-way tie for second.

This is in NHL 12, but figured I'd post.

Started a beagm with the Ottawa Senators. Ended up beating Vancouver in 5 games to win the Cup that personally surprised me (we were 6th seed in the East). Alot of young players made big jumps, which is great. Here's my line-up going into 2012-2013:

:

Milan Michalek(85) - Jonathan Toews(91) - Jaromir Jagr(86)
Colin Greening(82) - Kyle Turris(85) - Jakob Silfverberg(82)
Nick Foligno(82) - Zack Smith(81) - Chris Neil(82)
Peter Regin(80) - Zenon Konopka(80) - Erik Condra(80)

Stefan Thoresen(87) - Erik Karlsson(88)
Sergei Gonchar(85) - Chris Phillips(84)
Jared Cowen(82) - Matt Carkner(82)

Craig Anderson(87)
Ben Bishop(77)

*Thoresen is a created player. In the AHL are Robin Lehner(82, probable starter next season), Mika Zibanejad(76, most likely on next year's roster), and Doug Platt (73 OVR power forward drafted 6th overall, B- A B- pot.). Other prospects like Noesen and Puempel are in juniors. Personal preference but I enjoy GM mode in 12 more than in 13.

I had Boedker playing on my third line (Schenn and O'Reilly as linemates) and he had spot duty on the 2nd PP unit...

2012-2013 NHL SEASON (DECEMBER 2012 REPORT)

RECORD (Overall): 22-12-3
RECORD (December): 8-3-2

NOTES: Stars continued their good level of play despite a grueling road trip mid-month. Eriksson and his line continued to put up points but also the second line of Morrow-Schenn-Jagr scored at a good pace. Trevor Daley has been extremely good and is leading the league in points amongst D-men even though he is a DFD. Lehtonen got himself injured again at the end of the month, which lead to Campbell getting called up and getting more games in the NHL. Goligoski was injured for most of the month. To top the wave of injuries that has plagued the team, Eriksson was injured around Christmas and will miss two weeks.

2012-2013 NHL SEASON (JANUARY 2013 REPORT)

RECORD (Overall): 28-17-3
RECORD (January): 6-5-0

NOTES: Decent month for the Stars team considering that injuries plagued the team. Playing a bit over .500. Nice win over division leaders San Jose at home (3-1) on Jan 19. Jamie Benn was selected to the all-star game and was named the 2nd star (after Patrick Kane) in that game. Loui Eriksson re-injured himself on Jan 10 for 1-2 weeks, missing more games. Eriksson only scored a couple of goals this month. Trevor Daley missed 3 to 4 weeks starting Jan 8. After all the injuries suffered in December and January, the Stars are going into February with a healthy line-up. Rumour has it that Stars will trade a prospect for a D-man before the trade deadline.

TRANSACTIONS AROUND THE LEAGUE

28th January 2013
WPG acquired C Joonas Nattinen from MTL
MTL acquired C Nik Antropov from WPG

*Apparently Antropov wanted out of WPG (I checked his stats and he only had 5+9 in 45 games). Either that or he had gotten into arguements with Olli Jokinen.

31st January 2013
CGY acquired a 2013- 1st round pick (DET), C J. Andersson and D M. Nicastro from DET
DET acquired G Miikka Kiprusoff from CGY

*Weird trade by Jay Feaster. I'd understand if CGY was selling but they're still in play-off contention and Kipper has been playing very good hockey. This most likely means Iginla is on the block as well.

31st January 2013
SJ acquired D Sami Salo from TB
TB acquired a 2014 - 1st round pick (SJ) from SJ

*San Jose is contending this season (and probably next season as well) so logical trade all around. Dallas is a bit blah on this because they had considered trading for Salo as well, although Modano doesn't like his contract. So TB has now been shipping out Ohlund and Salo, who's next?

No waivers this month.
