I don't know if this was a glitch or not, but I was watching the simming of a playoff game between my (Flyers) and Carolina, and we had 1 shot the entire game. Lost 5-0 with 61 shots against.

So I decided to start a Be A GM as the Jets, seems like a challenge (to be honest, I won only two cups with the Capitals in 10 years..!)

Lineup heading to 2012-2013 season as the Winnipeg Jets

E. Kane 84 - Little 82 - Wheeler 83
Ladd 83 - Jokinen 82 - Selänne 82
Antropov 81 - Wellwood 77 - Ponikarovsky 81
Miettinen 79 - Slater 73 - Fehr 77

Bogosian 84 - Byfuglien 87
Enström 81 - Hainsey 83
Stuart 81 - CLITsome 78

Pavelec 82
Montoya 74

I don't feel like wheeling and dealing too much right away, but I made one deal :

To ANA: P. Postma (74 OVR?)

To WPG: T. Selänne

Also traded a bunch of plugs for 4th rounders.

Let's see how this goes, I suspect I will finish near the bottom of the league for the first years but that's all good!

More to come!

My Devils are doing terrible! We are 10-21-4 so far. I've tried changing the strategies a bunch but we can't win consistently. Our top scorers are Kane (20 points), Kovy (19 points), Hossa (18), Shinkaruk (17), and Grigorenko with 16 points. Mika Zibanejad and Justin Hodgman are our only plus players... they are both +1 on the fourth line.

Speaking of plus/minus, Larsson is a team worst -16. He also only has 4 points, no goals. I want to trade him but I don't think I'll get a good return... he only has roughly 1/4 trade value.

Leland Irving has been terrible, while Spencer Martin has been solid.

Should I blow up the team? If so, who should go? I'm thinking Hossa, Kovy, Larsson, Irving, and maybe Henrique should be on there way out.

Current lineup:

Kovalchuk (90) - Shinkaruk (85) - Kane (87)
Grigorenko (78) - Henrique (83) - Hossa (87)
Skvortsov (80) - Karlsson (79) - Koys (81)
Zibanejad (79) - Hodgman (77) - Josefson (79)

Larsson (84) - Hamilton (86)
Sauer (83) - Tanev (85)
Gunnarsson (82) - Urbom (81)

Martin (85)
Irving (84)

That team looks like it should be competitive. Looks to me like a combination of incompatible strategies and line chemistry. It's happened to me once before where the team had been to the Stanley Cup final the previous year and mysteriously sucked the following year despite keeping the exact same players. To fix the issue I ended up having to ship out the older star players on the team and promoting the mid-Age players to a bigger role, and I was back in the playoffs the year after.

Yeah, I hate when this sort of thing happens. I did trade someone already, which I will make a post about soon. I am simulating to the trade deadline now, and more trades are likely to come.

Senators' Challenging Week Includes 9-1 Loss, Early Return of Spezza

A helmetless Cowen flips Kovalchuk's world upside-down, but how would the Sens fare without their 2 biggest stars?

This week was the perfect example of the good, the bad, and the ugly.

The good: Senators superstar Jason Spezza returned ahead of schedule, making his return about a week earlier than planned in time for Ottawa's game against the Dallas Stars. The Sens also managed a close 3-2 win over the rival Maple Leafs thanks to an overtime goal from Erik Condra, his team-leading 3rd through 6 games.

The bad: The Sens dropped their first game of the week 3-1 against the New Jersey Devils, with the defence in particular struggling without having Erik Karlsson as an outlet to get the puck into the neutral zone.

The ugly: Craig Anderson allowed 6 goals in just over a period in that Dallas game that marked Spezza's return, eventually dropping the game 9-1 in what can only be described as an ugly showing on every possible level.

The Senators currently sit at 3-3-0-0, with games coming up against the Penguins, Rangers, Islanders, and Coyotes.

Around the League

This was a terrible week for injuries. Kris Letang is out for an estimated 8 weeks after suffering a concussion, Chris Higgins is out for just as long after fracturing his collarbone, Zack Bogosian is out for at least 3 months after also suffering a concussion, Corey Crawford is out for a month with a fractured collarbone, Jaromir Jagr will miss 3 weeks with a pulled groin, and Ed Jovanoski is out with a broken leg.

Breaking News: Devils GM Lou Lamoriello steps down citing health reason. "It was a great run with the Devils, our playoff run last year was magical and it's too bad that I won't get that thrill again." Lou turned 70 last October.

The gm search didn't last long as the new season is right around the corner. On September 21, 2012, The Devils announced the hiring of their new GM, Austin Spratt. "I think this is a solid team, a veteran team," said Spratt "I would like to improve our prospect group."

I will do posts on the following days
January 1st
pre trade deadline
trade deadline
end of season report/pre playoff report
periodic reports during playoffs if I make them
end of playoff report
entry draft report
free agency report
repeat for next season

Felt like going all out with this post... enjoy.

Devils Trade Captain Larsson, Claim Koekkoek off Waivers

2011 fifth overall pick and former Devils captain Adam Larsson struts his stuff for the
Boston media. His career in New Jersey is finished.

Yesterday he was the captain of the New Jersey Devils, and today Adam Larsson is a member of the Boston Bruins. The Devils have been having a horrible year, and Larsson had been one of their worst players. In 42 games he is a -22 and only has 6 assists - no goals. Devils fans didn't think the team would be able to get someone to very pay much for Adam Larsson - but they were pleasantly surprised when they woke up to the news this morning.

Devils GM Deku Scrub was able to ship a package of Larsson, defense prospect Matthew Boos (3.5 star), and a 2nd round pick to Boston in exchange for another defenseman - Warren McElhinney. McElhinney was the first overall pick in last year's draft, and plays a style comparable to Niklas Lidstrom.

"We asked Adam if he thought he could benefit from a change of scenery. You could tell by watching him play that he didn't seem happy here in New Jersey anymore. He said he wouldn't mind being traded, and since he's been so great for us in years past, we decided to honor his opinion and trade him to the highest bidder. " said Deku Scrub.
"You've got to give up good players to get good players," Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli commented about the subject. "Adam and Warren both have tremendous potential and they can both be top defensemen in this league. We made the decision to pick up Adam because he's more established, and we feel our team can compete for the cup now. We'd rather have Adam than wait for Warren to develop."

Now that Adam Larsson is gone, there is a lot of speculation on who will be the next to be traded out of New Jersey. It seems that the Devils are now into fire-sale mode, as it doesn't look like there is any way that this season can be salvaged. They currently sit in last place in the Eastern Conference. 34 year old Ilya Kovalchuk and 39 year old Marian Hossa are the leading candidates to be on their way out at the trade deadline. Another question that this trade rises is that of who will be the next captain of the New Jersey Devils. Fans feel Dougie Hamilton, Hunter Shinkaruk, or maybe even Patrick Kane will get to wear the "C" on their chest. The announcement of who will be named captain is expected to happen sometime this week.

In other Devils news, overshadowed by the Larsson trade, the Devils also claimed defenseman Slater Koekkoek off of waivers from Tampa Bay. Koekkoek will play for the Albany Devils of the AHL. GM Deku Scrub said that he feels Koekkoek needs more time to work on his game in the AHL before he challenges for a roster spot on the NHL club.

Warren McElhinney is an 82 overall OFD with 4.5 yellow stars, and Slater Koekkoek is a 72 overall TWD with 4 yellow stars.

Faceoffs, possibly. Without knowing what the other guys faceoff stats are, I don't use Henrique at C unless it's an emergency. Josefson is efficient, probably should be playing 3rd line C. He won't score any points in that role but his line should be a + somehow. Eventually he'll level up and become more of an offensively player.

Another possibility is that the sim is just being weird. I mean in Albany's Calder Cup year in my game, they started 1-8-2. They ended up with 114 points.

As for my Devils, rumors of their demise were premature, as they've won their 5th straight Eastern Conference Championship and are trying to win their 4th consecutive Stanley Cup. They'll be facing the Oilers, who they defeated 3 years ago, in six games to win the Cup.

The first round series against the Panthers ended in 6, with a 3-2 overtime win. In the second round, the Jets managed to get a road split with a 4-2 win on the back of a Tiny Sakic (love this guy, he's 6'4" 225 and has a Sakic-like shot) hat trick. With things potentially looking bleak, the Devils took both sim games in Winnipeg easily and won Game 5 5-2 at home to advance, to face one of their rivals, the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Devils won the first two games at home, 4-1 and 3-1 respectively. But a turning point happened late in game 2, where Travis Zajac was cheapshotted in the head by... of all people, Mattias Tedenby. He's out for the season with PCS.

Without their ace faceoff guy, penalty killer and 1st line C, the Devils were beaten easily in games 3 and 4, leading to a Game 5 showdown that was tied at 0 halfway through the 3rd. Disaster struck at the end of a 5 on 3 PP as Kovalchuk was stripped of the puck by Jordan Staal, as he left the box, for a breakaway goal. Still with the 5-4 powerplay, Henrique answered 9 seconds later for a 1-1 tie, where it stayed into OT.

The OT that followed was one of the more epic OT's I can remember playing in this game with chances (and breakaways) for both teams. It finally ended late in the first OT, when Kessel made a ridiculous between the legs drop pass to Alex Burmistrov, who beat Cam Ward high blocker off the crossbar to give the Devils the 2-1 win and 3-2 lead.

In the sim Game 6, the Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but the Hurricanes fought back to tie the game in the second. On to OT again, I watched the sim, and the Hurricanes destroyed the Devils in this period.... shots were something like 14-2 but somehow, again late in the OT, of all people, Mike Sislo scored to send the Devils on to the Stanley Cup finals. One of the best storyline series I've played in awhile.

Shinkaruk - 76 faceoffs
Henrique - 60 faceoffs (I should probably address that)
Karlsson - high 70s faceoffs
Hodgman - 78 faceoffs (better than Josefson IIRC)

I thought high 70s was solid for faceoffs. Maybe I should get a faceoff specialist in the offseason.

Jackets Fire Howson, Hire Brown as New GM
September 15, 2012

Jackets President John Davidson addresses Scott Howson's firing.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have made a major change behind the scenes that they hope will reverse the fortunes of the organization.

President of Hockey Operations John Davidson announced today the firing of Scott Howson from his post as GM of the hockey club. Howson spent the better part of 5 years at the helm of the Blue Jackets, though the team made the playoffs just once in that timeframe - an instance that, to this day, remains as their only post season appearance in the club's history.

Davidson then went on to announce the hiring of Dan Brown, a Calgary native. Brown has no previous experience running an NHL team, but Davidson stated that he is not worried.

"Dan brings a fresh outlook on hockey operations," said Davidson. "He has had an eye on the needs of multiple teams for a long time, that includes this team, and we feel like this is the right choice. What we need people to understand is that there will be an adjustment period, but we want this team to be successful and this is a step in the right direction."

Brown will being his work immediately as the Jackets are set to open their preseason against the St. Louis Blues on September 27.

Well, it ain't that. That team is solid in that department, other than Henrique.

I would guess just a weird sim. I've been doomswitched in earlier games like that. It's sort of like the opposite of my teams that got 121 points two years in a row. (I mean I'm probably playing 12 games a season, but I do drop points, and the rate of points in the sims is still in my ballpark.)

Something is broken in the lineup that's causing it, but your fourth line is a + (bad fourth lines probably screw over a bunch of players) or thereabouts and you have good faceoff guys, so I have no idea what it is.

So.. Alright. WHAT THE **** JUST HAPPENED.

Sum up of the Regular Season 2012-2013 as the Winnipeg
Jets

So.. I thought I'd be in the bottom of the league.

Seriously.

But, instead, my record was 53-22-7, good for 1st in the NHL! What the hell!? So unexpected and random, can't really believe it..

Lineup (the whole season)

E. Kane 84 - Little 82 - Wheeler 83
Ladd 83 (C) - Jokinen 82 (A) - Selänne 82 (A)
Antropov 81 - Wellwood 77 - Ponikarovsky 81
Miettinen 79 - Slater 73 - Fehr 77

Bogosian 84 - Byfuglien 87
Enström 81 - Hainsey 83
Stuart 81 - CLITsome 78

Pavelec 82
Montoya 74

Team leaders:

Points:

1. A. Ladd 22+38=60
2. A. Ponikarovsky 31+28=59
3. O. Jokinen 23+33=56

Goals:

1. A. Ponikarovsky: 31
T2. T. Selänne, E. Kane: 27

Also Ron Hainsey and Zach Bogosian on D had 40+ point seasons, Hainsey with 6+41=47 points and Bogosian 8+33=41 points!

Goaltender stats:

O. Pavelec 61 GP, 2.32 GAA, SV% .922%
A. Montoya 21 GP, 2.01 GAA, SV% .928%

Montoya only lost 4 games

Jesus ****ing Christ really.. I can't believe this. Playoffs might come later. This is just too random!

The playoffs 2012-2013 as the Winnipeg Jets!

As I said, I am in a shock right now.. but let's get right into it!

Conference Quarterfinals!

Winnipeg Jets (1) vs. Pittsburgh Penguins (8)

Game 1: 1-0 Jets
Game 2: 3-1 Jets
Game 3: 2-1 Penguins
Game 4: 3-2 Jets
Game 5: 5-2 Jets

And so I beat the Pens 4-1 in the series, WOW!

Conference Semifinals

Winnipeg Jets (1) vs. Carolina Hurricanes (4)

Game 1: 2-1 Jets (OT)
Game 2: 2-1 Hurricanes
Game 3: 5-1 Jets
Game 4: 3-0 Jets
Game 5: 2-1 Jets

Once again, a 4-1 series victory, now over the Hurricanes.. Seriously.. What the hell.

Conference Finals

Winnipeg Jets (1) vs. Buffalo Sabres (2)

Game 1: 3-2 Sabres (winning goal with 2 seconds left in the game...)
Game 2: 4-2 Sabres
Game 3: 3-2 Sabres
Game 4: 4-3 Sabres

And so I got swept in the Conference Finals.

But hell, I was expecting to be a lottery pick team this year. But instead, 1st in the NHL and made the Conference Finals. Definitely happy and excited for next year!

Was hoping that Selänne would've gotten a Cup in Winnipeg though.. Oh well EDIT: He didn't retire yet!

All I have to say that, good job guys, all around! Really surprised!

More to come!

LOL, the game must like the Jets lineup out of the box, for some reason. In the first season of my Be a GM, the Jets were the 1 seed in the Eastern Conference with around 110 points.

Then they lost to my crappy Devils in 5, who were the 8 seed with 87 points, after their incredible run to make the playoffs, in which they lost their last 6 games in regulation.

Summer of 2013, Lineup heading to season 2013-2014 as the Winnipeg Jets

The summer wasn't that exciting. Signed all the key guys to reasonable contracts etc.

Offersheeted Derek Stepan (NYR) to a 3 year deal, with a cap hit of 3,645M and got him, only giving out a 2nd round pick. Will try to trade Jokinen for a 1st rounder. Also signed some minor guys, nothing spectacular.

The lineup

Ladd 84 (C) - Little 84 - Selänne 81 (A)
E. Kane 84 - Stepan 82 - Wheeler 82
Burmistrov 78 - O. Jokinen 82 (A) - Ponikarovsky 81
Antropov 79 - Richardson 76 - Osala 78

Bogosian 87 - Byfuglien 87
Hainsey 87 - Enström 83
Stuart 81 - Clitsome 78

Pavelec 84
Montoya 74

Depending how it works, I will try to get rid of Jokinen and Antropov, possibly even Wheeler. No real untouchables, anyone is available for the right price (= [HUGE] overpayment) but Selänne isn't going anywhere.. I'm happy with what I have (atleast for now..) We'll see how it goes!

More to come!

EDIT: I ended the season with a record of 43-35-4, good for 6th in the East, lost to the Maple Leafs in the first round 4-3. Bummer. Alright, whatever.

Upon taking over the team, the new GM made aggressive moves to change the culture of the organization and instill a winning attitude. COLUMBUS 1ST ('13)

The key move for the franchise was acquiring Ryan O'Reilly from the Colorado Avalanche after the two parties failed to agree on a contract and it looked like the young center would be sitting out. The Blue Jackets offered Artem Anisimov and top prospect Ryan Johanssen to acquire the young forward. The move paid great dividends as O'Reilly immediately established chemistry with veteran forward R.J. Umberger and has been taken under Jaromir Jagr's wing as he is on pace to shatter his previous career high in goals, points and +/-. The Blue Jackets currently sit in 5th place in the Western Conference with a record of 38-20-9.

Just claimed Jeff Carter from the waivers! Thanks a bunch LA! And why? Because they traded for Frolov...

Hopefully the trades I've made and the progression of my young guns will turn this team around. I went past the trade deadline last night, and made another big trade:

Ilya Kovalchuk (34 years old, 90 overall LW) to Anaheim in exchange for Sam Reinhart (86 overall centerman, 4.5 yellow, and 22 years old, I think)

I tried to trade away Marian Hossa as well, even for just a first round pick, but even the teams who wanted him wouldn't take his contract. Which is pretty sad, honestly, the team who acquires him only has to pay him $10 million for like three months, then he is UFA.

New lines:

Grigorenko (78) - Shinkaruk (85) - Kane (87)
Henrique (83) - Reinhart (86) - Hossa (87)
Skvortsov (80) - Karlsson (79) - Koys (81)
Zibanejad (79) - Hodgman (77) - Josefson (79)

Sauer (83) - Hamilton (86)
McElhinney (82) - Tanev (85)
Gunnarsson (82) - Urbom (81)

Martin (85)
Irving (84)

Hopefully we can get a top-five draft pick! Or maybe we can magically start winning now?
