Who is your #1 ranked player in fantasy hockey this year?

Who would you guys take?

Standard skater categories are G, A, PPP, +/-, PIM
Standard goalie categories are W, GAA, Sv%, SO

My league also has hits for skaters.

What are the # of players at each position?

I'm thinking Stamkos, but Malkin probably has C/RW in your league (Winger gets depleted fast)

Stamkos and Malkin are the safest picks at 1/2.
Then I'd go with Crosby or Ovechkin

Crosby and Stamkos are only C eligible. Malkin and Giroux are C,RW. But wingers don't get depleted fast, there are many quality wingers later. Fastest to get depleted are elite goalies and top C's.

# at each position are as follows:
-2C, 2LW, 2RW, 4D, 2G

Crosby

Also I don't think he'd be taken 1st overall by most, but considering how much more of a fantasy asset Karlsson was than other defensemen last year I think he deserves to be in the poll. Definitely seems like a 1st rounder.

I'll take:

1. Stamkos
2. Malkin
3. Giroux
4. Crosby

and after that I'd have to see what's there, etc.

The only reason I'm taking Stamkos over Malkin is because I'm already cheering for Stamkos anyway, might as well have another reason to cheer. It's strictly personal preference.

He's actually ranked 25 by yahoo (ridiculous, I know), so I'm hoping he's left for me when the draft comes back to me with pick 20.

Malkin for me, should I get the #1 pick in my draft. He's listed as a C/RW in Yahoo!, so not only do you get a top-end center, you get the flexibility to play him on the wing too. The center position is much deeper than RW.

Crosby. Long layoff, short season. Hopefully he's fine. He is the only player that is all but guaranteed to be #1 if he stays healthy.

If you worry about his health, you gotta go with Malkin.

I don't really worry about his health in this short season so I'd go with Crosby. If he plays every game I could see him getting around 80 points, then Malkin is second with around 70.

I think it may come down to the fact that Malkin has RW eligibility and Crosby doesn't. Lineup flexibility is a big deal, especially in a shortened season when so many guys will be playing on the same night, it's good to have options to move players around allowing your entire lineup to be full.

I'd take Crosby. Malkin would be my close second.

Sid is usually a slow starter for the 7-8 first games of the season, and then he starts ripping it up. Last season he played at a close to 2 PPG clip in the twenty-ish game he played and I think that a healthy Crosby can reproduce that kind of success over 48 games.

Malkin is currently in beast-mode in the KHL... If he can carry that momentum, he should be very close to Crosby and could very well be ahead as well. You can't go wrong with either of them, I'd say.

Meh i was 5th in my draft of 10 and ended up with Giroux would of loved Malkin!

but I also managed to acquire Hall and Eberle....with the way they have dominated the AHL I hope the chemistry careers over....also got Shultz very late as a dark horse.

In a pool with my friends Stamkos went 1st, I took Crosby at 2 and Malkin went 3rd. It was a bit risky to take Sid over Geno but I just have a gut feeling he is going to remain healthy and tear the league a new one

On that note what do you guys think of my team? It was only 4 friends. 8 forwards, 5 defence, 2 goalies 1 rookie.

Crosby
Eberle
Seguin
Hall
Spezza
E Staal
Kessel
Nash

Weber
Pietrangelo
Doughty
Shattenkirk
Phaneuf

Quick
Smith

Tarasenko

Exactly, I don't see how Crosby can by anyone's first overall. Plays on a ****tier line, doesn't have duel eligibility, typically takes less shots and less PIMS, not to mention is more likely to get injured. No brainer for me.

For a group of four I guess that's pretty boss.

I'm in a group of 12 and I got

Mike Richards
Ryan Getzlaf
Daniel Sedin
Milan Michalek
Jordan EBerle
Marian Hossa
Drew Doughty
Alex Pietroangelo
Mike Green
Justin Schultz
Nail Yakupov
Mike Ribeiro
Michael Cammalleri
Slava Voynov
Mikka Kiprusoff
Josh Harding

I was picking 7th overall... so I'm kinda happy with what I got.

6 forwards, 4D, 2 goalies and 4 benched.

Happy to see that my guys will start the season healthy. Most of the otherp layer have number of injuries on their teams to start the season. I also did a good job of staying away from players on teams I expect to do worse this year.

I have to watch Yakupov, Ribeiro and Voynov carefully to see if I should take them off of the bench.

I understand what you mean, but most fantasy leagues are tilted towards forwards.

Most ~80 point forward are going to provide more fantasy points than Karlsson, due to the extra goals, shots, and PIMs they are likely to provide.

Also, Karlsson isn't a guarantee to hit the same PPG pace as last season.

Throw in the fact that Letang and Byfuglien are likely to play all the games this year, and Karlsson's point gap over other defenseman might not be as large as you are thinking. I certainly don't expect Karlsson to score ~30% more points than any other defenseman next season.

Now, I'm not saying that Karlsson is a bad player. He is a really good player, and a fantastic fantasy asset since defensive play doesn't factor into fantasy hockey at all. Just not worthy of first overall in a fantasy draft.

Should Karlsson be the first defenseman off the board in almost every fantasy draft? Yes. (Exclusions are for leagues with non-standard scoring: i.e. heavily weighted G, PIMs, hits, blocked shots, etc.)

But is taking Karlsson 1st overall really worth skipping over Malkin, or Stamkos? No way.

IMO, getting Malkin or Stamkos, and the best defenseman available at the end of round 2 is much more likely to pay off for your fantasy team than taking Karlsson and the best forward available at the end of the second round.

I know a lot of people play Yahoo! fantasy around here, but over on my ESPN league last season the difference between Karlsson (#1 ranked defenseman last season) and Chara (#2) was smaller than the gap between Chara (#2) and Weber (#3). It was smaller than the gap between Weber (#3) and Pietrangelo (#4). Categories for scoring were G, A, +/-, PIM, ATOI, SOG, PPP. (LINK: http://games.espn.go.com/fhl/freeage...otCategoryId=4)

TL;DR - Karlsson should be the first defenseman taken in fantasy drafts, but not considered for first overall.

Malkin for me with that C/RW eligibility.

I'd lean towards a star who's going to hit and get a few PIM. Malkin I would think should have higher PIM than Crosby and will still produce at a ridiculous rate. Stamkos hits a bit more too, IIRC. Ovechkin's a tank and should rebound.

I took Quick with the 3rd overall. 14 man league, category scoring with: G, A, +/-, PIM, PPP, TOI, Hits, BkS, GAA, SV%, Win, SO.

My team was:

3. Quick
26. Hossa
31. Backes
54. Landeskog
59. Callahan
82. Varlamov
87. Seabrook
110. E. Kane
115. Kunitz
138. Cole
143. Couturier (internet disconnected and it autopicked)
166. Hamhuis
171. Bieksa
194. Fisher
199. OEL
222. Ott
227. Brouwer
250. Boedker
255. N. Foligno
278. Hamilton
283. Hedberg

Not too many big names, but I'm hoping to win hits and PIM by a fair margin and support it with solid goaltending.
