All Things Basketball Thread

Only major sport we don't have a thread for haha. Use this for all basketball. NBA, College, or international.

No trolling.

I'll start it off. The Knicks are stupid. Should of sign and traded melo. They need to do a proper rebuild. If being mediocre is bad in hockey it's even worse in the nba.

Also nets are done. Pierce left.

Only way a sign and trade would have worked is if the Bulls put Gibson and Butler in the deal, which they never would do. The difference in money that the Bulls and Knicks could offer was just insane. You can't take $50 million less if your Melo.

As a Bulls fan, I'm used to the disappointment. I never really believed they had a shot at him. They'll be better with Gasol, Mirotic, Mcdermott, and whatever the hell they get out of Rose, but there still not championship caliber. They have nobody that can create there own shot, which will as usual do them in come playoff time when Rose gets locked up by LeBron or whoever.

Also, Houston is having a hilariously awful offseason. They lose Parsons for nothing, Lin, and Asik and only bring in Ariza to replace them. They'll be lucky to make the playoffs next year.

My point was the Knicks should of just got what they could. Not play hard ball. Keeping melo prevents them from doing a proper rebuild and there are no free agents to build a contender out of with love eventually going to the cavs and Aldridge saying he is staying in Portland.

Going to end up with a middle of the road draft pick and attempting to over pay for mark Gasol.

Durant will not be going anywhere in two years.

I honestly like the Bulls plan B. Melo made the most sense since it took a ton of pressure of rose. Plan B required him get back to MVP shape at some point but if he does they can contend in a weak east.

Miami is dust. Indiana is dysfunctional. Cavs and wizards aren't ready and no one else is worth talking about. Of course no one is beating the west next year.

I agree on Houston. It is comically bad down there. Funniest part to me is apparently they only did the Lin trade because they had heard from Bosh he was going there. They weren't going to trade Lin otherwise apparently. Then oops bosh back to Miami.

In a stacked west I agree. They could easily miss next season.

No they're not. They're getting back a Healthy Lopez(crossing fingers, I know) and Deron Williams(who FINALLY had surgery on his ankles in the offseason) plus they still have JJ. And I think KG is still under contract so he'll be back, too.

They also have some good YOUNG players that aren't sexy names but can step up and do some good on that team like Mirza Teletavich(sp?) who can light it up from 3 and has gotten better with his ballhandling skills.

They also have a head coach who is a real head coach and not a power-hungry mongrel like a certain someone in Milwaukee that shall remain nameless.

Miami will be better than people think, if Wade doesn't look like hes 75 years old next year. If they can somehow pry Bledsoe out of Phoenix or Monroe out of Detrot, then there probably going to be a 45 win team. They'll run the offense through Bosh who will probably be a 20 and 10 guy every night, like he was in Toronto. Deng, McRoberts, Granger, Napier, Cole, Birdman and whoever else they add is a decent supporting cast when your in the East, lol. If Deng and Granger can stay healthy they'll both be 15-20 ppg guys.

I wouldn't sleep on Washington. Pierce is exactly the kind of veteran player they needed. They'll be a top 3 team in the East.

I say Washington stays in the middle of the pack. Pierce may bring the leadership but he tends to go all Hero-ball more often than not. Hero-ball = Almost always wanting to take the last shot of a game.

Which is fine.....if this was 2010.....

Why does the NBA require teams making trades to have equal cap value going to both teams? (I think I got that right). It makes making trades so much harder than other sports.

It really ******* me off that Miami didn't completely implode after LeBron left and they still managed to retain Bosh, probably Wade and bring in Luol Deng. Of course in the NBA it's generally better to outright tank than to be a middle of the pack team, but in the Eastern Conference you could make a run as a middle of the pack team much like the NHL's Eastern Conference

They don't want to make it easier for teams to just offload big contracts for draft picks at the end of the season to clear cap space and tank.

They don't really do. It is just that most teams are close or over the cap and cannot take on additional salaries in trades.

Pat Riley is kinda like Lou in that regard. Does not believe in rebuilds and is not a fan of developing a lot of young players. Miami certainly can compete with that team the next two years again. Not enough to win another title but enough to make the playoffs and even win a series or two. And i would hate too see that 1st they still owe to Cleveland to be a high pick.
And it seems everyone but Bosh will only get a two year deal so they can throw out big money again in two years when both James and Durant will be free agents.

I could have sworn you had to be within 25% of the cap value of contracts - i.e. if you traded a $10 million guy you had to take back at least $7.5 million in the deal (of course sometimes teams dump long-term contracts for guys on the last year of their deal to facilitate clearing space, that's why 'expiring contracts' have value in the NBA). Unless it changed with the last CBA.

Lin was traded together with a 1st for a 2nd and some player rights. No salary went to Houston in that deal. There are just some rules how much additional salary you can take once you are over the cap.

Ya I am pissed they didn't completely implode too, but it took giving Bosh a crazy contract to do it. I just don't see the corpse of Wade bouncing back to help them do much of anything. Their contender days are over.

Wizards will be good, that back court is one of the best in the NBA. Up there with the Warriors and Suns. Only reason I'm not ready to put them over yet is they are still young. Wouldn't sleep on them though.

Edit: Not that it was a question but seems Mirotec is finally coming to the Bulls. I think he could be really good for them.

Wade got $17 million a year, holy crap that is brutal. Dude looks like he needs to be assisted living with how bad his knees are.

It's obvious that Wade is out of his prime and had a bad finals but people think. He just went through four seasons all lasting till June and that's trying on his body and it's not like he had bad numbers in the regular season and the playoff series before the finals. It reminds me of how people talk about Thomas Vanek on hfboards.

They are paying him $17 million to be a damn corpse. There is loyality and there is dumb. This is dumb. Max money for Bosh and this. I get Miami had money to burn but Jesus.

Edit: apparently talks have restarted between wolves and warriors for love. Guess the cavs refuse to budge on trading wiggins.

How many corpses can still put up 20/5/5?

You will not find a single Heat fan that will complain about this deal. And Bosh is a max player in this league. Without LeBron he will put up numbers similar to Toronto again.

Wade is not putting up 20 a game again, unless hes playing 40+ minutes a game. Hes still a good player, but $17 million a year is way too steep.

Looks like the Bulls finally amnestied Boozer. About damn time. Watching this Noah, Gasol, Gibson, and Mirotic front line is gonna be fun.

The Cavs really should acquire Love. Unless Wiggins realizes his potential within 3 years they could potentially waste some of Lebron's prime. Obviously I think they should use a package of Bennett+Waiters+1st+... rather than Wiggins and try to acquire Love using those pieces. But it comes down to the fact that Love will make the Cavs a better team today then Wiggins will and they should be in win now mode.

Although it would be cool to see Irving-Wiggins-Lebron-Love-Varejao.

He also had Lebron James commanding all the attention from team's defenses. Deng is not going to take that pressure. Now you can focus on Wade and he doesn't have enough in the take to take over and charge the net like he used to.

You will see his numbers drop this season.

Bulls had no choice, no one was going to take Boozer's contract. Should be a fun interesting team to watch next year.

You're comparing an apple with an orange. People talk down about Vanek because he's never been a big-game player. Wade was the ultimate big-game player, but he's a worn 32 and already should be on the Popovich 'old man maintenance' plan instead of being paid and treated like a guy that's going to play 40 minutes a night.

I wasn't comparing that in depth. It just reminded me of how everyone **** on Vanek after the Rangers series and everyone saying Wade is a corpse after the Spurs series.

He signed for TWO years, he's actually getting less money than he opted out of. The way you guys were talking I thought he'd signed a five-year deal lol
