Detroit's PP in 95-96

I'm watching the brawl game between Detroit and Colorado. That was 96-97 right? Anyway, they mentioned that Detroit's PP the season before was 2nd best all time after the Flyers of the 70s (if I got the season right it was 95-96). That floored me. Better than the Oilers of the 80s and the Habs of the 70s? Anyway, anyone have their percentage? Did I hear it incorrectly? I've searched and couldn't find it. Thanks!

Their PP was a very good 21% that year, but it wasn't even the best that season. The Pens at 25.95% lead the league. You'll also quickly notice that 23-25% were pretty common in the early-to-mid 90s.

The Oilers peaked at 29% in the early 80s. The only thing right there is that the best PP was in the 70s, but it was the Islanders hitting 31% thrice and the Habs holding the record at 31.9% in 77-78.

Thanks. Given how wrong that was I must have misunderstood. Or he was talking about PK. I doubt though that Detroit had the 2nd best PK either. Plus I think they were on the PP at the time, I believe.

Heard it wrong, or the broadcasters were wrong.

person probably meant to say PK.

PP% and PK% have been officially recorded since '64.

highest PK%, '64-'97
'64 TML: 88.72
'74 flyers: 88.39
'96 DRW: 88.27

washington set a new record in '98 (89.23). in '99, boston's 89.18 also broke the old record, but not washington's new record. in 2000, dallas set a new record (89.25).

last season, NJD set a new record of 89.58%.

The particular broadcaster who did that game was Mike Goldberg if you're watching the broadcast I think you're watching.

He's mainly known for a few things:

1) He's the voice of the Lingerie Bowl.
2) Most of his announcing work is with the UFC.
3) He also is involved with the reality TV show "Shaq VS."

...so I have to applaud him for being as accurate as he was.
