Pretty much a non-starter. The Blues can give up a center in a package for a better center; or can give up wings, prospects, and picks for a center; or can give up wings, prospects, picks, and defensemen for defensemen.

What this guy said.

There's almost no way the Blues trade a center without a better center coming back. There's also almost no way the Blues trade a defenseman without a better defenseman coming back. Wings and prospects are the places we can afford to deal out of.

This is the year Berglund steps up. Blues have been wise not trading him.

Looking at players with a similar makeup and background, this is not far-fetched at all.

Backes is another large guy who had to improve his skating. At the same age, Backes jumped from 31 points to 31 goals, and it wasn't for another couple seasons that Backes became an elite defensive player - Berglund is already better overall than Backes was at the same age.

Perry is large guy who isn't a gifted skater and he had already broken out, but he absolutely exploded when he was 25.

Swedes are also notoriously late bloomers. Ages when these guys became impact players in the NHL...
Alfredsson - 24
Zetterberg - 24/25
Franzen - 27
the Sedins - 25/26

It's not universal, but being Swedish and, more noteworthy, being a large player without great skating, 24 is the right age to look for all of the pieces to come together.
If you go back ten years, you can find even more examples of late-blooming Swedes and late-blooming large players without speed among the best forwards: Naslund, Bertuzzi, Glen Murray, Robert Lang.

It might be next season, but if Stewart, Tarasenko, or Perron break out on Berglund's wing this year, it could be a big shove into maturity/breakout. On top of that, Berglund's play late last year looked terrific. He and McDonald were easily their best two forwards in the playoffs. It's not uncommon for players to break out in the playoffs and retain that level of play in the following season.

Grabo for Berglund+ some cap relief to even out trade cap wise?

plays tough hockey and is defensively reliable too.

Could this work?

No? Berglund is probably just as valuable now and could add to that in the next couple years...Yet you want more?

We can't really afford Pleks or Grabo with some of our other young guys needing contracts.

Hence trading salary back to Toronto. Perhaps more salary so that the Blues gain cap space?

Cap space is something the Blues will never need.

St. Louis isn't going to make a trade just to make a trade either, unless it's a package for a star center then it doesn't make sense. So these Berglund for Eller and a third proposals just aren't going to work.

Why would the Canucks do this? It would open a bigger hole than it would fill.

I was under the impression a top pairing D to play with Petro was a higher priority. Besides, don't you have a couple wingers that can double as centers?
