The Conjuring

Anyone plan on seeing it? It's getting excellent reviews thus far, especially for a horror film.

I'm interested. Though this is based on a case that the Warrens covered, and AFAIK they were pretty big frauds.

This is getting amazing reviews. Now 90% on RT.

Finally. A horror movie to satisfy me. The last one I can recall doing that was The Descent.

Getting awesome reviews.

IMDB- 7.9
RT- 84% critics/91% audience

Guess it made over 3 million last night in midnight screenings too.

Well it was an enjoyable movie to watch. For a movie that was hyped as being very scary it did fall short in that aspect though.

Worth checking out if you are into the horror genre. Just keep in mind its nothing mind blowing.

I liked it a lot more. Although not as much for the scare factor. I felt it was a lot more in-depth than most horror movies and was just a better overall movie than your general horror flick. Still jumped a few times and the girl I was with jumped a lot more (she hadn't seen the trailer which is probably why).

I'd recommend it, especially to those who like horror flicks.

Movie as a Whole: 8/10
Movie for Purely Scare Factor: 6.5/10

Agreed, scary parts, very entertaining but I certainly didn't leave the theater scared.

I agree with the above comments. I didn't find it particularly scary but it was entertaining enough. People around did seem to be frightened though in their exit comments. I think you have to really buy into the atmosphere to be scared by the film.

On another note, it looks like this will be a well-reviewed wide-release horror films. Only romantic comedies probably do worse with critics. Here's the full list of wide-release horror films with 80%+ on Rotten Tomatoes (min 100 reviews) since 2000. It seems to average about 1 a year.

2013 - The Conjuring - 85%
2012 - The Cabin in the Woods - 92%
2010 - Let Me In - 89%
2009 - Drag Me to Hell - 92%
2009 - Zombieland - 90%
2007 - The Orphanage - 86%
2007 - Paranormal Activity - 83%
2006 - Slither - 86%
2005 - The Descent - 85%
2004 - Shaun of the Dead - 91%
2002 - 28 Days Later - 88%
2001 - The Others - 84%
2000 - Shadow of the Vampire - 81%

Really liked it. Found some parts scary, but wasn't as scary as I thought it'd be. But a great MOVIE, not just horror film.

Excited to see where the Warrens go next.

edit: great to see it's liked all across the board. Fans are loving it, critics are too. Estimated to make about 40 million this weekend.

Decent movie. Best of the 3 Ive seen (Texas chainsaw and evil dead)...which isn't saying much. Performances were strong, the story engaging, the scares..dead on arrival. Too over the top for my taste. The moment people start getting tossed around then room...I tap out.

They should do a movie about how much of a fraud the Warrens are.

Awesome movie, really liked this one. So much story development, something the horror genre sadly likes to skip in most films. This did a great job of getting you to truly care about these people and the peril they face.

On a sidenote, was that list of the best rated horror flicks from the last 10 years real? 92% for Drag Me To Hell!? That movie was ****ing awful!

I give it a meh. I am not only for horror films, but this one was pretty obvious when the scary parts were about to happen.

Saw 85% on RT, got hella excited. The movie ****ing sucked. That was supposed to be scary? Are you serious? Very disappointed.

Agreed, hated DMTH, ****ing terrible movie and it wasn't even funny or scary. It had a high rating on IMDB for a while too though it eventually decreased.

Anyway I really want to see this, it's receiving lots of praise as being an overall good movie, with or without the scares.

Ranked #1 at the box office this weekend with over $40 million made in 3 days. (plus midnight screening)
Not bad for a movie with a $20 mil budget.

Off topic, both Ryan Reynolds movies bombed bad this weekend...when did he turn into box office poison?

When he started trying to be an action star.

Completely agree with you. Horror fans will adore the film as a love letter to 70s horror. Enjoyed watching all of the actors, the plot development made sense, and it had that unique hook that every distinguishable horror movie/franchise needs to differentiate itself. I'm not even disappointed that the climax kinda bombed, or that there were a few loose/pointless plot threads. A huge CLAP CLAP from me.
