Im starting to think Benn's heart isnt really in Dallas.

I get the feeling he will leave after his next contract.

Which is disapointing. every other team in the league had the chance to want benn and didnt, they all passed on draft day, Dallas is investing in his brother and giving him a chance. Would be disapointing if he leaves

I don't think I am fooled by such hackneyed tropes and neither would be a smart GM and front-office. After 3 seasons of penny-pinching mediocrity, it's time for management to build a championship-worthy team around him, Eriksson, and the like, if they want to retain them in the long run.

Agreed which is why I'm having trouble believing money is the big issue here. Like with Weber, Nashville was willing to give him crazy money but he ended up signing with I guess more attractive organisation. Why wouldn't the Dallas front office give their franchise player what he is worth for that team?

People always talk about some player's value being higher to his current team than it would be on free market (Zajac most recent example), basically overpaying to keep the player. Benn is the Dallas Stars at the moment, so I'm having trouble seeing the front office not giving him the money (different situation with Subban who is still somewhat unproven compared to Benn).

Money is *also* an issue. Let's not kid ourselves about that. However, for the sake of my franchise, I'd hope he gets his wish for a 3 yr-deal (which will still leave him as RFA, but he'll have arbitration rights) so that the organization gets its act together and starts doing what needs to be done.

I was sure I saw Benn say something similar to this at some point last year. Can we stop with all the Benn to Canadian teams? He's not interested. I bet he re-signs in the Big D before the end of the day.

Actually, it's looking more and more likely that he misses opening night.

Yep, and that'd also mean he misses the 2nd night of a back-to-back in Minnesota....unless of course, he's here in Dallas and not in B.C.

McKenzie contradicted him within the hour on Twitter after confirming with Benn's agent. To be fair though, Kypreos only stated that the Stars "offered" $33m over 5-6 years and not that Benn('s agent) had agreed to it.

Why does a contract disagreement imply his intention of leaving or staying? Respected players today have gone through contract holdouts and still stay on the team. Even the Sens captain went through this: 4th paragraph

Thanks. Might I add, the situation between Aflie and Ottawa mirrors exactly what's going on between Benn and Dallas. Both players want/ed short-term deals whereas the club wants/wanted a longer commitment.

Even if he misses some games I'll have no ill will on either side and it doesn't mean he wants to go anywhere else. Both sides just want to get what is best for them. If the time wasn't so condensed missing games would never have been an issue.

As a Devils fan, I can tell you Zach Parise comes to mind.

He's played something like 62 games less. 160-222 I think. Not that big of a difference. Especially since Subban has been thrown into a much greater role in a hockey mad market. I think he's proven that he's a pressure player; in other words he's earned it.

He would get 6M/yr if he signs with the Oilers.

It's the term that's the issue. Not the money.

Contract length is the issue. Money seems to be second hand.

So he's hold out for a 8 year max term?

He wants a shorter term. Presumably so he can cash in closer to UFA age and once he's put up more points.

Probably wants a short term deal to see the progress of the team the next few years instead of making the same mistake Rick Nash did.

Heika from DMN is now saying he likely won't play for the opening night and probably this weekend.

Short term (like 3 years). He'll get a bigger payday when he hits closer to UFA status.
