Make no mistake, plenty of you wouldn't bat an eye at this if he'd signed with, say, the Nashville Predators.

He won't even play much, if at all.

The ONLY positive of this (if there is even one to be had at all) is that the Canucks did not pay him as much or more than the Oilers did.

I still cringe at that contract. ugh.

I don't think it is that bad of move, Vancouver's defense usually has tons of injuries it is smart to have a backup plan. In Av's offensive system I think there is a chance he plays closer to the way he played in Chicago than Minny.

Why does everything Canucks related turn into a debate about whether or not 'Canuck bashing' is occurring?

It's a depth signing related to a guy who probably won't play any games for the Canucks this season. Most NHL teams would be fine with having any NHL experience represented in terms of their 2 string SPARE defenceman, so what's the problem?

Has it been confirmed that it's a one-way contract?

Difference is that thread took 4 hours to reach this length, "Canucks" to it and it's here in 1/2 hour. That's my problem, anytime the Canucks make a move of any kind it's an unmoderated troll/bait fest. Gets annoying when all you want to do is rationally discuss hockey.

Such backlash for an 8th D man/AHL project. Obviously this isn't a top 6 or even 7 signing for the Canucks. This has to be his last shot though after 3 other teams.

As a Canucks fan, I don't expect to see him in the lineup unless there are multiple injuries.

Ugh, was AV watching the 18 games we played against EDM and MIN over the last 3 seasons? Barker is garbage ...

Take a guy with arguably the worst work ethic in the league, add some of the slowest feet in the league and combine that with a brain even slower than those feet and you've got Cam Barker.

Most Oilers fans had a cautious optimism for the Barker signing last year, but we weren't ready for what he had in store for us.

Barker for Norris!

Seriously though, I had to Wikipedia this guy. Sounds like a lot of people are gonna have to get hurt before he plays.

The problem is that he's an injury prone defenseman himself, so we're just begging for another injury should that scenario occur. Plus you know AV is going to play him instead of Ballard ...

Maybe because he's pissed off two different organizations now instead of one (three if Chicago counts at all)? Naturally with more people pissed off at him, there's going to be more backlash when another team signs him. And considering there's a lot more Oiler fans on here than Wild fans, the backlash is going to be quite a bit bigger than last year's too.

Wait, this is one-way? Even better

Seriously, he is a pylon with zero hockey IQ. He has become a hollow shell of a hockey player. And he looked horrible in Texas Stars, for crying out loud.

Had he signed for any other team, the reaction would've been the same. Hell, we rather signed Paul Mara than Cam Barker.

you did not read any of the comments in the thread posted about when the oilers signed him

We thought we had struck pay dirt--man were we wrong

does matter who signed him--this would happen.

He stunk up the joint in Edmonton last year

Rome might not be talented, but he's obedient and fairly consistent, Barker is not. AV has said Barker is a reclamation project, ala Higgins too, meaning he won't see ice time unless he proves himself to us, or at least Vignault.

For 700k and slotting in behind Hamhuis, Edler, Bieksa, Garrison, Ballard, Tanev, Alberts and presumably Connauton or even Sauve (depending on camp me thinks), I don't get the hate. We won't be playing him in over time tied 4-4 in the Stanley Cup Final, he might not even see the ice as a Canuck, unless he shows something.
This, not to mention if he doesn't play well the Canucks will just send him to the minors without batting an eye. This is a team that routinely has multi-million dollar contracts playing on their AHL team to bury salary to get better players. I don't foresee them having any problem burying 700k in the minors for a year if he doesn't perform up to snuff.

I personally don't like signing him, would have liked it to be just a camp invite to see if he has any motivation to improve/work hard. hut, not like ti will hurt the Canucks at all if it doesn't work out.

even then, that's debatable, looked very bad playing in the ahl earlier this season.

What is hilarious is fans of the Edmonton Oilers (not you) bashing the Canucks organization for signing Cam Barker as a reclamation project and 8th/9th defenceman when he regularly played 20 minutes a night for the Oilers last season.
