Just further proof of the void of available depth dmen.

Cam does not deserve another NHL contract. Very lucky on his part.

Prediction: Gillis will trade Barker and Mason Raymond for an upgrade a month into the season ala Sturm and Samuelsson for Booth.

And it really doesn't matter if its a one-way or two-way deal, makes no difference to the Canucks since it's less than $900K.

Edmonton paid him $2.2mil after Minny's buyout. Not $700k.

Everyone knows he's a bust, but the cap hit is at least correct.

Well to be honest I got a chuckle out of the "no cup" comments at first but the riot comments are uncalled for.

It's a depth signing related to a guy who probably won't play any games for the Canucks this season. Most NHL teams would be fine with having any NHL experience represented in terms of their 2 string SPARE defenceman, so what's the problem?
Seriously, some people are taking it to seriously. People would be making fun of this no matter who signed him. He got cut by an AHL team this year. I honestly thought the Spengler Cup was the last hockey I was ever going to see Cam Barker play.

Yikes. High risk if he's on the ice.... no possible reward.

Has any Canuck fan in here insinuated that they struck "pay dirt"? No, it's a guy with NHL experience sitting 8th on the depth chart for 700K, yet we got people falling all over themselves to slam both parties. It's really not a big deal, everyone should know what kind of signing this is.

Who cares if it's a one way contract? We've had guys on $2M+ contracts in the AHL the last few years. Do you think we're going to balk at waiving a $700k guy?

I personally think he's insurance and will probably be the #8 at a push, and that would only be to allow the likes of Connauton to play regularly in the AHL rather than warming a seat.

Could you provide 2 or 3 quotes from Canucks fans who think they have struck pay dirt with this signing?

is this guy worse than brett ledba, because if he is, then i truly feel sorry.

Lebda was by far the worst leafs defenseman i have ever seen.

Its not a big deal, people are allowed to say the guy sucks if he sucks. You're making a big deal by arguing with every other person that posts.

I'll take a 30 second shift. Just one, that's all it takes.

The idea that anyone in the Canucks organization thought this was a good use of $700,000 is hilarious.

I don't foresee them having any problem burying 700k in the minors for a year if he doesn't perform up to snuff.

I personally don't like signing him, would have liked it to be just a camp invite to see if he has any motivation to improve/work hard. hut, not like ti will hurt the Canucks at all if it doesn't work out.
I don't think we can deep six contracts any more, but it's only 700 K.

For so many people calling the guy a bust, he has had a 40 point season with Chicago of all places, and has played nearly 300 games. For an 8th defenseman, I have no trouble with the signing. If we had given assets away or signed him for several million for this season, then I'd likely be flipping tables. But we didn't. Poor work ethic and slow feet/brain are why we have AV, if he doesn't perform to Rome standards, he won't play, everyone but Barker is happy then.

Beats trading for another version of Barker, losing one of our goalies in the process...

Well ya, what place did the Oilers finish in and what happened to Renney?

With the new CBA, anything over $900,000 in the minors gets tacked onto the cap of the NHL team. You can't bury contracts in the minors anymore. At $700,000, this isn't an issue.

prediction

first ten games nuck fans will be taunting oiler fans over how bad the oilers screwed up

next 38 games Hawks, wild and oilers have a good knees up at the expense of the canucks.

He as no hockey sense and if the canucks use him and Ballard at the same time--the drinking consumption on the canuck board will reach new levels
Barker is #8 -10 on the depth chart. It's extremely unlikely he plays a single minute in the 1st 10 games...

Did the Oilers really pay this guy $2.2mil last season? If so, that's pitiful. Barker is not an everyday NHL player.

Steady Steve said could be a top two defenseman on our team when he signed him. We were all kind of thinking, "Ok. Maybe he knows something we and Minnesota fans don't know".

We were wrong.

Exactly my point. There's very little risk beyond AV inexplicably becoming infatuated with Barker, but given the type of player that he usually falls in love with I can't see it happening.
