Outside of the Hanzal **** up, I have no complaints really about the 1st period of play. The team weathered the storm much of the 1st period and managed to get a few good scoring chances though non one them went in. Smith, Lombardi, Vermette, and Z are our best players in this game so far.
We aren't playing incredibly bad - just keep it simple for the first game. Some of the pucks that are being turned over are off of these little flips and whatnot where players are still trying to find their position on ice, etc. If we make that play later in a regular season, we probably have a D-man or Sullivan straying back a little bit as they see the puck, or the expectation that Hanzal just tries to corral it and move up the ice instead of the little pass he tried to get to Vrbata.
We're out-hitting the Stars, playing physical, and getting some decent shots on goal - with the exception of Dallas' goal, they've had similar shots. We are also weak early on in allowing tipped shots at the FO circles and above in the offensive zone. The Sharks PP did that to us last year in the opener, and Dallas is notorious for that in their offense.
Just tie the game up and take as many points as we possibly can get in the first 6 or 7 games.
