What about Cogs? If he continues to be effective on that line there would be no reason to move him, would there?

I just really would like to see some skillful kid on that line. Also I was talking about the next season, no one can replace Cogs on that line right now.

Perry commands 9 mil per according to Dredger. Was just discussed on NHL Live right now. The term? Still being discussed.

Umm, was 9 million his request or did some "expert" make that up?

Dreger actually said, Perry COULD command as much as 9 mil per. Not that he has or will. Also, says Perry would be more likely trade candidate than Getzlaf. Sounds to me like pure speculation on his part.

Well that's a lot different to "Perry commands 9 m".

HUGE difference. Also nobody in their right mind is giving Perry 9mil. Max he could get is 7 years elsewhere correct? It's harder to do front loaded contracts but still feasible. Malkin and Crosby have cap hits of 8.7 just cant see see Perry getting close to that. 7.5 max

"Nobody in their right mind" includes at least half of NHL GMs during the free agent frenzy.

Not comparable though, Malkin is on his 2nd contract and Crosby's new deal is for 12 years. If it was for 8 years his cap hit would be 10.8

Malkin's next deal will be interesting though, I'm thinking his cap hit will be over 10 on that contract.

There is no way possible that Perry could command $9 million per year, not in this era. People sometimes forget, back-diving contracts were invented solely because teams knew they can't afford cap hits like that. Two exceptions were made(for generational-type talents), but most teams fully assumed the massive risks that come with these lifetime contracts because they cannot fit that big of a cap hit in.

Perry and/or Getzlaf could still leave, but I'd say BM made a smart and very calculated risk in waiting until after the new CBA to try and sign them. The new CBA wasn't absolutely perfect for us, but it was pretty good. Now if a team wants Getz or Perry, they probably can't outbid us(in terms of AAV, obviously not whatsoever with length), and would struggle to fit them in to do so. Few teams can also afford both, and those teams probably aren't of much interest to those guys(just a guess on my part). This gives us a pretty significant advantage.

I can't disagree with any of the logic I'm reading here. But you just can't discount the fact there is always one or more GMs ready to do something really stupid. The Gomez contract, the Gomez trade, Penner's 2nd contract, the Campbell contract, etc, etc.

Regardless of any new CBA, if Perry hits ufa, somebody will make him a stupid offer that we won't/can't match. Now, he might be willing to take a bit less from us or somebody else, but rest assured some f'ing idiot will make him a ridiculous offer.

Ohh is that what Dredg said? Sorry all walked into the room a little late when Getz and Perry were being discussed on NHL Live this afternoon.

I think if Perry hits the market he'll get upwards of $8M, and $9M is not out of the question, especially if it's not a max-term contract.

Perry will know he can command a big payday, he'll also know that these biggest of paydays will only happen in the biggest markets, with the biggest media scrutiny

Dreger doing his usual speculating.

I can see us going to 7, maybe even 7.5 to keep him, but 9? ridiculous if his agent comes in asking that, I would start listening to offers immediately if they aren't willing to come down

That's what they pay him to do (among other things).

If Perry hits the open market I would almost guarantee someone offers him $9M per year. If Gomez can get $7.5M when the cap was much lower on a legitimate deal then Perry will get offered $9M by someone.

I guarantee a franchise with money will do it. And you know damn right we can't match that. If he's offered 9 he's as good as gone.

If Lupul? Can pull off almost a 5.5 mill for 5 years it's scary to see what Perry may want / receive from other teams.

Neither would I. He's earned the right to ask for a lot, but I don't see that as a wise expenditure for a team like ours.
