Never heard of team depth? Gillis loves to have as many options possible. My guess is that Gillis is offering these guys one-way deals at less than $900K and if they don't make the team they'll be sent to the AHL. You can never have too much depth when it comes to defense.

I like it. This year with lots of injuries likely for all teams defensive depth will be key. Aaron Ward said that same thing on Vancouver radio this am. Almost every team will need lots of defencemen.

While Barker has, Vandermeer hasn't played in the minors for a long while. The Canucks have too many defensemen or Vandermeer is now fine with playing in the minors.

While they could find a take for Ballard, it wouldn't surprise me to see them dealing Edler. Even though his value/salary ratio is quite high for this season.

For a 48 game season, an organization needs to grab as many defenceman as humanly possible, even the crappy ones. Canucks are being smart in this situation by grabbing as much depth as needed.

Short camp and heavy season schedule probably means more injuries ... just stacking up on defense in case the worst should happen.
