If I'm gillis I roll the dice on Gomez. May as well just spend some cash on a Bozak like player rather than any real assets. IF (and it's an IF) Bozak was one of the player Nonis is dangling it removes Bozak from the equation and forces Nonis to offer up something else.

Yeah jeeze...you got guys complaining about Cam Barker and people want to sign Scott "I didn't score a goal for an entire year" Gomez? Unbelievable.

Has to be under that 900k number but yeah why not. If the only other option out there right now is moving Luongo for Bozak I'd go Gomez. Despite the issues he is better than Ebbett

Then at that point they trade him because he's no longer a starter but he wants to continue playing. Now say he puts in 3 more years as a backup before retiring, leaving him with one year remaining on his deal. The Canucks would then be on the hook for a nearly $15 million cap hit in 21-22, whereas is Luongo slogged it out for another year they'd be on the hook for nothing. To me that's ridiculous.
Can you explain the difference between A) and B) please? That doesn't make any sense to me...

Different when he has no pressure, no huge contract. If we get him at $700k he can also be a shuttle-bird between here and Chicago too.

Gomez would be a terrible acquisition.

One less contract space and could limit the possibilities if a potential Luongo trade involved multiple contracts.

Gomez is a beer leaguer at this point. 500k two-way, 70k if he plays in the minors.

Contract spaces rarely prevent a team making a trade. They can be freed up pretty easily. I've never actually heard of it happening to tell you the truth.

And no he's not a beer leaguer. He may not be an NHLer (but still could be) but he's definitely a good AHL player at this point.

I'd rather have Gomez @ 700K than Barker @ 700K. Better a has been than a never was....

The "cap benefit" is divided out over the remaining years of the contract that aren't played. So in scenario A the Canucks have traded Luongo after paying about $6M more in salary than cap hit so that amount would be divided out by the 3-4 years left in his contract if he retired in his late 30s. That's the most likely scenario IMO.

Scenario B was an extreme hypothetical where the Canucks kept Luongo for the big money years of his contract and then traded him. They'd have paid nearly $15M more in salary than cap hit so they'd get hit with that as a penalty. If Luongo retired with 1 year left on his deal they'd get hit with that all in one year.

Canucks still have 3 contract spaces left...

What possibilities would it limit?

You guys don't get how the buy-out process works.

Every team gets to bid for the service of the player. As much as Gomez is a zoo, there's other teams that I'd see giving him a shot better than the Canucks.

I also think they wouldn't let him play for another team if they allowed a buy-out now. Then why couldn't all the buy-outs happen now ??

EDIT: Teams can use only one of these accelerated buyouts, which will then count against the two compliance buyouts allotted in new CBA

Scott Gomez is an excellent buy-low candidate. His underlying numbers suggest he's a good bet for a bounce back season.

And then there was Redden

Pierre LeBrun ‏@Real_ESPNLeBrun

Happy for Redden - stuck in minors for 2 years. Great guy and deserves another chance. He'll get it now.

People saying Gomez is a beer leaguer are odd.

Is Scott Gomez a better playing than dale Weise? Yes

Ohh, it's the difference between total salary paid out and total cap hit, divided by the years remaining on the contract. I see. Forgive me, and this was probably stated in that excellent link, but if Luongo was traded from VAN to Team A, and then traded again years later to Team B, would the above formula remain constant as it applies to VAN? Or would Team A or Team B be sucked into that penalty as well?

Those are 2 different entire players but I have no problem with Gomez but not to fill a Weise role
