I also think they wouldn't let him play for another team if they allowed a buy-out now. Then why couldn't all the buy-outs happen now ??
They are calling these "accelerated buyouts" and any team can do them BUT the whole cap amount counts against your cap this year.

So if Montreal buys out Gomez they still pay him this year and it counts against their cap.

And yes they can go sign with other teams.

Remember this year is prorated too. So even if he's $900,000 that's really only $500k or so.

2nd line center on a contending team? pretty good option if we are interested. We may not be but if we are it deserves some real serious consideration

Or would Team A or Team B be sucked into that penalty as well?
It's just based on how much more in salary each team paid out than cap hit for the time he was on the team. So if Luongo is traded tomorrow, the acquiring team will be on the hook for any cap benefit incurred from year 3 until he's traded again (or retires). So if a team got him and kept him for 5 seasons (years 3-7 of his deal) before trading him, they'd have a penalty of just under $7M that would be applied upon Luongo's retirement.

Also, the Canucks will continue to have a $6M or so penalty regardless of how many times Luongo is traded in the future. The only way out of it for them is if Luongo plays out his deal (or retires due to injury and continues to receive salary).

Gomez has been a positive possession player the last few years. He's actually underrated because of his enormous cap hit. If he can get on the Canucks fitness plan, I think he'd be a solid +/- 2 million dollar third liner. Hopefully the league makes a few allowances and lets Redden/Gomez be bought out early. Seems like a fair solution.

They are being bought out but NY and MON retain the full cap hit this season

I'll take Weise over Gomez for our 4th line wing

If the Canucks are picking up Gomez, he'd be put in the role that Schroeder/Ebbett are fighting for the "2nd line".

Even though with the roster the way it is, the Lapierre line will basically get 2nd line minutes.

If I was the opponent I would rather get hit by Gomez then Weise, that's for sure.

Gomez and Weise are not even remotely competing for the same position. Why compare them?

Don't know but he did play in South Surrey and the Vancouver area for a bunch of years when he was younger. Well known in the area by those my age.

I would agree with that. It's more about line combos then it is about an actual depth chart with AV. I could even see our 4th line having comparable minutes to our 2nd line with Kes/Booth out.
Raymond-Ebbett/Schroeder-Kassian yikes

Yes. I think he's like a (very) poor man's Henrik Sedin at this point, in that he can generate some good possession and set up offense, but he doesn't seem capable of scoring goals. If you put him on a third line with some scoring wingers who play responsible defense (Higgins?) you could have a pretty good two-way line.

Even while not scoring in Montreal I noticed he was still quite effective at puck possession. Still a fast player as well.

I'm very serious about Gomez. It makes a hell of a lot more sense to pick him up cheap than it does to trade Luongo for Bozak.

Replacement smurf for Ebbett or Schroeder or Raymond.

One with a bunch of 70 point seasons.

Worse at what? Weise played great last year for a rookie 4th liner. I can't even imagine how his name is what you decided on as a comparison.

I doubt Gomez comes out here, he'll be a Devil by tomorrow.

Agreed. He's basically zero risk at the cost he would be at and potentially high reward. Worst case scenario he sucks and you put him on waivers.
