It's a difficult question. I think Tavares has a higher ceiling than Toews when just looking at the offensive side of the game, but Toews does more on the defensive side of the puck and in the faceoff circle as well.

Also, not to knock Tavares, but I think Toews brings more to the table from a leadership perspective, all joking about intangibles aside.

So I'd say Toews now and Toews going forward, but every franchise in the league would count their lucky stars to have Tavares on their team.

Voted Tavares in the future, but he would have to get to 95+ points to be better IMO.

Tavares. I think now and future.

This year was the year you could really see how good Tavares was. Last year I would have probably said Toews now, Tavares future.

I'm pretty sure there's a thread on this already. It's just gonna end up with people saying Tavares is sooo overrated.

How would you possibly know that?

It's tough, they're pretty equal. Tavares has more potential, a higher ceiling, but Toews is already a terrific player in all three zones.

I'll go Toews now but Tavares in the future...? Tough decision.

Because I know how great of a leader Toews is, especially as it's essentially the first thing that everybody that's ever played with him has ever said about the guy, and he has a much deeper leadership resume, especially in the postseason, than Tavares.

Also, note that I said "think" when I said that. Clearly indicating an opinion, which is what this topic is asking for.

No one knows for sure, but it helps that Toews has captained pretty much every team he has ever been on and at 25 years old has Captained two Stanley Cup Winning teams while Tavares isn't even that captain of the Islanders(although that will likely be rectified soon).

Toews now, Toews future.

He does too much all over the ice.... Tavares may outscore Toews by 10-15 points, but willing to bet that Toews prevents an additional 10-15 goals against while on ice with his defensive abilities vs Tavares

It's so close right now so I went with my guy Tavares, and I think he will also be better in the future.

His offense should be a step above Towes. Defense can be learned (Steve Y.) and leadership can not be measured.

It's really a toss up so lets just be happy we have one of them.

Toews now, and in the future. Tavares will always be a top offensive force and point producer, but Toews is still very young as well and i dont see Tavares developing all the other areas of the game that Toews already has down. I feel like too many people overlook those things, and just focus on the point totals. Frankly, i could care less if Tavares is putting up 90-100 pts, and Toews only puts up 80-90, as long as he does all the little things that make him unique.

I definitely take Toews now and probably in the future as well, but I wouldn't put it past to Tavares to eventually surpass Towes.

Well, he already improved his skating, strength, and passing 2 summers ago. Last summer, he worked on his shot and it was a big improvement. Not only did he finish 3rd in the league in goals, it became a strength and he didnt even have any playmakers on his line. His first 3 years, he rarely ever sniped. His work ethic is incredible and he always says he wants to work on his defensive game and be a complete player. Hes improving every year defensively, people think hes bad defensively because of his +/-, but only isles fans know that he's been on the ice for about 6 empty net goals last year. Also, moulson and boyes are awful in their own zone, which doesn't help. Josh Bailey needs to be on his line. It should be interesting to see what he worked on this summer.
