I for one vote for trading O'Reilly for one of Petry's skates.

And I don't mind overpaying a little. Stazz gets overpayed by a lot more. Only a few teams would be playing hardball with a 21 year old player that has gotten better every year and is one of the best two way centers who has to take on other teams 1st line centers game in game out. Avs will never serious contend for the cup if they keep hugging the cap floor.

If the avs were to give OReilly 4M per, that would place the avs at 58M and 18th in the league salary wise. The cap floor is 44M.

Next year, the Avs would be at 53+M with still 3 players to sign. The cap floor is 44M. The ceiling is 64M.

I dont know whats more innacurate. Your idea that they are hugging the cap floor, and therefore never in serious contention for the cup.

OR

That you believe that management should just give in to any contract demands of their younger players, regardless of whether they are deserving or not, and that somehow, dishing out bigger contracts will in fact make them a cup contender.

Overpaying players is how you severely reduce the ability to have quality depth in your organization. Every 500K to 1M overpay you give to each player, makes your depth players (3rd and 4th line and 3rd pairing) significantly weaker and therefore much more susceptible to higher variations in play when injuries occur.

That was hyperbole from my part. He doesn't suck but I said that because he isn't that good either and he gets overrated a lot on these boards. (Avs forum) I do like him a lot though but like I said he gets overrated by Avs fans for some reason.

Petry isn't bad. Just overrated by some Oilers fans.

Very jealous that the Oilers have Justin Schultz though. He's going to be a problem for a long time.

Probably because he seems to beastmode when playing us every single game.

Would be funny to see the Avs sign Gomez to a $2-$2.5M deal for this shortened season.

Where's your leverage now, comrade?

He would have even more leverage then. It would only take a couple of games before the Avs and everyone realize how awful Gomez is. They would be begging to get O'Reilly back.

He looked pretty good last year. Wouldnt be a good return for ROR by himself, but as part of a package, I would think it wouldnt be a bad return at all.

That would be more embarassing for us more than anything to sign Gomez while Ryan O'Reilly gets traded or sits out. Just sign the kid to a long term deal if that's what he wants and make it cap friendlier than what he's asking. At least he's not asking for the speculated Subban $.

Kids these days are head strong, they won't just go with the flow and they aren't afraid to explore their options once it becomes a matter of principle. The Turris situation was a good example. He signed for a bargain with Ottawa but I doubt Phx would've signed him even if they offered three times as much....need to treat ROR right in these negotiations (within reason). And LA didn't really win with the Drew Doughty situation when he sat out, they ended up giving him the $ he wanted.

So here is a CBA question. If he plays out the year in Russia, this year cannot count as a year of service, right?

An established scoring D, with at least an average defensive game that allows him to play on the top pairing with EJ, is what the Avs need. There aren't a whole lot of D available out there though that would make the Avs very interested, if they're giving him up in return. That's probably why they may be reconsidering keeping O'Reilly.

Essentially, if youre able to show 70+ point production, youre in line for possibly, 6+ M, multi year deal in just a couple of years.

Dont hockey players always think they have even more to show and thus, more to earn when they show it.

I cant fathom that OReilly and his agency believe he is worth 5M on a multi year deal already.

As a Leaf fan I wouldn't mind giving him $4.5-5M if he signed for say 8 years. You give him more than he earns now, but you hope that it turns into a mega steal for the end half of the deal.

I would be willing to move Gardiner+ but it wouldn't be a huge +, one of our B'ish type prospects.
