The biggest intrigue to this is the potential for low cost / opening roster space. Talent wise it's a huge question mark. Drafted the same year as Reimer and as a professional, has a career that's eerily similar to Reimer's. Been 6 1/2 years since the guy was drafted so the time is coming for him to take a dump or get off the pot.

But apparently LA likes Macarthur as well as other pieces down in the Marlies system.

Also, Carlyle is going to work closely with Dave Nonis and see what they can bring in to approve this team, and its also important to note what Carlyle ran last year, and what he's going to be running in this current training camp.

Does Clarke Macarthur fit a Randy Carlyle checking 3rd line role?

I haven't heard much of what LA has coveted this off-season due to the lockout, but last year there was interest in Clarke.
Thanks, Chuck. Good info. I can see the interest in Mac with how he'd fit in there.

I never saw much in Bernier. Never really stood out to me as an elite, star or quality starter in the NHL.

I have been wrong before so perhaps scouts see more than I do. I'm also not a big fan of smaller goaltenders.

Another issue with Bernier is that he's only played 31 NHL games in the past 2 NHL seasons. Not even because of injuries, just stuck behind Quick. That isn't a big amount of games to develop.

With that said, if there's a deal to be made that makes sense, I would do it. Nothing against Scrivens but I think Bernier is definitely an upgrade over him. Younger and probably better potential. Even if he doesn't become a #1 goaltender, he's a reliable backup at worst.

I guess it would depend on the details of the deal.

For me, as long as Kadri or Frattin, or our 1st or 2nd this year, aren't in the deal, I'm interested.

Also depends on if Bernier is the only piece coming back

Mac going the other way, and opening up room for Kadri would be ideal.

But considering Bernier is more than likely leaving LA, and is in a "buy low" situation, he could be an interesting option to platoon with Reimer.

We may see LA bite on our depth of NHL capable players that we cant exactly find a home for on our roster.
I have never been a big fan of Bernier straight forward but if we can barter scrivens with some other pieces I might be willing to give it a shot. Both Reimer and Bernier battling it out for the best would help quite a bit.

I'm fine with Bernier if we get him relatively cheap and it stops Nonis from overpaying for Luongo (although, I think it's obvious that Nonis won't pay a ridiculous premium for Luongo and I'm thankful for that).

I dont want Luongo. I dont want his contract and he is going to cost the team heavily in the long run.

If the cost is right take Bernier and dont trade Riemer and see if any one of them are a #1 goalie. Right now i believe Riemer can be a #1 goalie and i believe Bernier can be a #1. If they dont work out use the draft to find someone else.

Agreed, those four pieces are someone I am reluctant to move.

Bernier is overrated. He'd never be seen so glowingly if he was a Leafs prospect.

Bernier is an upgrade over Scrivens, and potentially Reimer.

I would welcome a Bernier trade, he would fit in nicely with the core going forward.

Also, Carlyle is going to work closely with Dave Nonis and see what they can bring in to approve this team, and its also important to note what Carlyle ran last year, and what he's going to be running in this current training camp. He's had this team "thought out" for quite some time, so this training camp is closer to a conditioning camp and not a tryout.

There may be some surprise cuts and vets left off the roster, and there may be a move made before this season gets underway.

My question is, does Clarke Macarthur fit a Randy Carlyle checking 3rd line role?

I like MacArthur a lot, but I'd dish him for Bernier.

That would give a spot for Kadri/Frattin to win out.

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Kadri
Frattin - McClement - Kulemin
Komarov - Steckel - Orr

Phew, thanks I was confused.

BTW it will be Bernier + Carter for a big future crippling package. They will both bomb and we will be forced to start over again.
(I don't mean to be pessimistic but this is what I'm used to)

When I answer "yea, easily" to a fan's trade proposal, it usually means it's insulting to the other team.

Bernier will cost a lot more than MacArthur and a third, and that's why i'm terrified if this happens. Lets gamble on our own guys instead.

With regard to "other pieces", I wonder if we could pry away Loktionov to increase our centre depth? Like Bernier, he is trapped with Kopitar, Richards and Carter ahead of him. MacArthur + something small for Bernier + Loktionov could be a solid deal. Low risk, potential reward.

Probably not much.

I dont see a Cup winner being very likely to trade roster pieces.

Hey Chuck, how do you think an offer like Mac + Scrivens would look to LA?

I dont think his cost will be that much. Goalies, in particular non-proven goalies, dont typically have big price tags.

only makes sense the Leafs are kicking tires on several goalies, wouldn't want the Nucks to think Lou's the only show in town. Personally, I don't know what the Leafs should do in net, therefore I'd be happy seeing what a tandem of Reimer/Scrivens can do. The old Buddhist adage "by doing nothing, we've done everything" seems as good a path to take as trading for Lou, who can still play net, but that contract???????
