Look at the points per game, not the point totals. Toews is a far superior offensive player.

I think they're both pretty damn good defensively, however.

Compared to his "peers" I think he is overpaid. But this is also under a new CBA, so there aren't really any fair comparisons.

Meanwhile, I'm incredibly happy to see him sticking around NJ and centering Kovy for some time though.

And at this point, both are (nearly) proven winners. Or at least have the ability and experience to be on long-season teams.
Let's not pretend Toews would be making 6.3m if he went to free agency. The most tangible difference between the two is that Toews is only 24 and still approaching his prime. I'm talking about the two players, right now. By the time Toews is 27, this will be a silly conversation. But RIGHT now, I don't believe it is.

Honestly, the biggest difference is the CBA the deals were signed under right now.

But I have to say, comparing Toews contract to Zajac makes me think that Zajac is slightly over paid. But I'm happy he's sticking in NJ, I'll tell you that.

Glad we got Zajac locked up. Lou got it done early for once and I'm glad we won't have as much drama this summer.

My ideal contract would be something more like 6/30, but this will do.

That's an awesome quote. Seems like a jab at Parise's one year deal.

After a top pairing defenseman, a big, good 2 way center is the most difficult position to fill. The deal is not only good it was a no brainer by Lou.
I agree with you. Having Zajac and Henrique as our top six centres for the foreseeable future is a future that looks bright.

Very classy. I like that I've never heard anybody say otherwise since like the mid 90s.

Zajac is an excellent player and I guess besides Kovy (for his goal scoring), the most important player on this team. To scrutinize this deal doesn't make much sense imo. What should he be making? 5 million? 5.3? You have to give the guy some kind of increase off the prior deal and these #'s wouldn't be much. He is a complete player in the prime of his career and he's very deserving of this contract whether it be years or money.

I'll tell you this much, I'm definitely glad Zajac stayed put rather than Parise. Not saying it came down to pick one of the two, however, the more important player is locked up long term.

Personally, I'm super pleased with this deal. Lou did good work here.

YES!!

Did not see this coming at all. I am SO relieved we not going to have to go through the UFA heartburn with Travis.

Perhaps it's a slight overpayment, but not too bad. I think it's a fine contract. Nice work, Lou.

Travis Zajac on being a long-term Devil: "Its something I take pride in. I love wearing this logo on my chest. It means a lot to me.

This brings a smile to me. I'm glad we have at least one homegrown player from that generation that loves being with the Devils.

I agree, I think Zajac is the more important player to the core of the team going forward. Not that losing Parise doesn't hurt, but losing Zajac would have hurt more.

And assuming Henrique and Josefson reach their full potential, this is a very nice core to work with.

This is a great deal. It isn't a discount, but it is a tremendous deal without question.

He provides tremendous value and much of it will appear off the stat sheet. If the other team starts appearing on the sheet then there is a problem.

No issues at all.

And if Clarkson doesn't get everything he wants during the offseason then he can hightail it too, he got a great contract currently and doesn't deserve much more on his deal.

It does soften the blow quite a bit that our most important UFA has decided to stay long term. Maybe it will shut those bozos on the main board up about financial problems too. ''Devils can't afford Brodeur, and Parise so they're going to free agency!"

It's switched to "How can a soon to be bankrupt team give out such a horrible contract?"
