Secondly, making the cap hit worth $5.75 million with a declining cap is going to hamper future deals and cost you a different player. Not to mention a FULL NTC, we're talking about Zajac here right? This has Gomez/Redden written all over it.
Did you watch him at all during the playoffs? He might have been the biggest reason we made it to the finals. And he had six points because he was freakin injured, my god lol.

This contract has big time potential to look like the Drury, Gomez, and horcoff pacts sometime in the next 4-5 years.

Highlighted the key words. All I am saying is that it really isn't relevant when discussing players in the present. For example, Horcoff was better than both from 2005-2007.

Kesler is currently the better player and I don't think that is much of a debate, and this is coming from someone that would rather set himself on fire rather than watch the Canucks win a cup.

The salary and term are a little bit scary given that the cap is going down, but if he absolutely needed to be signed and the Devils aren't in cap trouble, then it is a good signing I guess.

Erat is a similar player (consistently mid-50s point totals) and signed a 7-year deal in 2008 with an average cap hit of $4.5mm. Inflation-rated, Erat's contract is roughly ~$5.5mm a year average cap hit today. Seems largely fine to me as Zajac may have a slightly higher ceiling, but I don't watch the Devils a lot.

Well he's going to be playing with Ilya Kovalchuk for the next 8 years.

Just from my perspective - Zajac was 48 games away from becoming a UFA.
Reilly is 4 years away from being a UFA. REALLY signficant difference IMO.

Yes Zajacs contract is over a little, but to what his value is to the Devils, it's right on par. The Kesler comparisons are moot because he might not even play this season, zajac will.

Good signing for you Devil fans, to an important, well liked, well needed player, you might have paid a little extra but it is worth it.

Same. I actually like Zajac's game. And I say this as an Rangers fan. The length is pretty bad though...

Except the best part of Zajac game is his defense and size.

Actually, thinking it over, I think this contract is fine if Zajac plays up to his standards.

The money seems a bit high from where I am.
However, I'll chalk it up to the fact that I rarely see him and thus, I am likely unaware of his "intangibles".

If NJ fans are happy, then gratz!

So is Jordan Staal, and his cap hit is 4m/yr.

The contract is pretty damn OK for the first 5 years. But that's where I would've drawn the line if I was Lou. 5 years at 5.75 is a good deal for Zajac and only a tiny overpayment by the Devils (if at all).

I did see him in the playoffs, He looked pretty decent. But is there a precedent to a contract like this for a player that just came back from a major injury and had a decent playoffs?

WITH Zajac signed Nj has 26 mil to spend on Henrique, Elias, Zubrus and Clarkson next year. People need to stop saying deal is bad because the cap is going down next year

Anything over 5 years and $5m is going to bring a lot of "experts" out of the woodwork. People that don't the differences between UFA/RFA, don't consider leverage positions, team situations, etc... The only thing his contract should be measured against is his value to the franchise, not to kesler, not to Richards, not to anybody else.

As much as I'm loathe to agree with Jonathan about anything, the term is a much bigger issue than the cap and if you have a problem with the contract it should almost certainly be directed at that.

Tough to draw a line without leverage. Devils couldn't afford to lose him, and i'm sure it was quite easy for Zajac's agents to point at the pending UFA centers for 2013 and show Zajac was going to get paid.

Getzlaf must be smiling today, there isn't crap for centers after him now.
