Maybe. I would take Zajac on the Rangers at that price (provided we had the room/need which we don't).

I think this is a good signing by the Devils. Lock up a good young player, show commitment to the team especially after Parise left and continue to field a solid team.

This board is so absolute ridiculous This guy lead his team to the SCF as the Nr. 1 Center while scoring clutch goals. He absolutely deserves this contract. He is elite defensively and guys who say otherwise have absolutely NO idea. He is good offensively and a perfect linemate for the 80-90 point scorer Ilya Kovalchuk. That's it. Be happy to extend your Grabovskis and Halls while we go to the SCF with the overpaid Zajac! I'm okay with that

If that were the case than players like DiPietro would get 15 year contracts.

Oh, wait.

Measuring a player's terms and salary based on value to the franchise and not against other, similar players in the market is absurd.

Getzlaf must be smiling today, there isn't crap for centers after him now.
I definitely agree that they can't afford to lose him. But I just don't see why you give him 8 years. Just doesn't make sense to me.

The best part about Drury was his defence. Horcoff too.

There's good reason to believe Zajac has already peaked offensively, and the Devils bought years that Zajac will likely be in decline.

Yep, we heard the exact same things with the Koivu contract. I have no regrets about it.

Up until you said Ilya Kovalchuk, I thought you were talking about Shawn Horcoff.

Lebrun chimes in, and likes the deal:

http://espn.go.com/blog/nhl/post/_/i...al-set-a-trend

"Not sure most people would have pegged Zajac at $5.75 million a year. But I think it speaks to the respect Devils GM Lou Lamoriello has for his No. 1 center, and a strong belief that Zajacís best hockey is front of him. I agree on that."

For this season only; he got signed to a 10-year deal in July with the Canes for an average cap hit of $6mm.

Staal has never broken 50 points. Zajac puts up slightly more points and is at least as good of a two-way player, likely better. Staal's deal only further corroborates the fact that this is a pretty decent deal, or at least not a massive overpayment.

I tend to agree, but it's pretty clearly a gold watch deal.

I love it, considering Parise bolted. Can't put a price on that kind of loyalty.

To me, Zajac is a fair bit better player than Grabs is. I'd much rather pay Zajac 5.75 than Grabs 5.5.

What choice do they have? He would have got 7 years as a UFA, probably for slightly higher. The extra year is the only leverage NJ had to get him to sign.

2010-2011 season where half the season no one on the Devils was putting up points? The highest point total from that season on the Devils was like 62.

Last season he came back from an Achilles injury. He's not a PPG player and wasn't playing that many minutes.

Actually, a few of them honestly admitted they haven't seen him play and quite a lot of them have use only point totals to make the comparisons to Kesler, Pavelski, etc.- which is quite indicative of them not having seen him play. These comparisons are meaningless, ludicrous, and downright juvenile. No one seems fully aware of what he brings, what NJ's situation is going forward from a team perspective, or (more importantly) from a marketing perspective, having just lost a franchise player in Parise for nothing and with Elias and Zubrus nearing the end of their days in NJ (they may extend Elias for a 1-2 yr deal). Yes, it is a bit of an overpayment- maybe in the 0.5-0.75k more /year range- but they had to do it or risk losing him too this off-season. That would be disastrous for the team that just regained stability via new ownership.

Arguable but I agree he is better. Point is, it's not the money per year I'm annoyed with. It's the friggin' contract length and how it affects the rest of the league

Horcoff went to the finals as well. Drury's Sabres went deep into the playoffs as well. Doesn't mean squat going forward.

Well, technically I think Zajac DID put a price on loyalty.

He certainly didn't take a discount and got a huge term length in the deal.

In the world of bad signings, though, this is not near the top. I just tend to have a fear of signing guys who are defensive, physical players to long term deals. I pray to God Sather doesn't sign Callahan to an 8 year deal or anything, as much as I love the guy.
