Well you gotta pay your 1st line center. Somewhere Filppula must be smiling.. Not good for Detroit.

Dats and Zetterberg are better than him defensively. Zajac is a very smart player, and is our best Faceoff guy. Hes on that next tier, just below Datsyuk and Zetterberg
If that's the case, I think this contract is fair.
Where could NJ get someone of his caliber without trading assets or go on a bidding war during FA.
Also FA signings are riskier than Zajac who is playing well in their system.

Terrible contract. This reminds me of the awful Horcoff deal the Oilers have been stuck with.

Slight overpayment for a very solid player that is especially important to the Devils. They're glad to have him locked up so long I imagine.

Overall, I like it, good signing.

They did overpay but that's what it took to get him to stay with the Devils so you gotta do what you gotta do.

I tought Henrique was going to be your next Zajac. Guess i was wrong it's the right price for the Zajac we saw two years ago but it's holy overpayment for the Zajac of last year, i hope for you guys he will bounce back.

120 games vs 420 games. LW vs C. Not really comparable. Zajac contract is much much better than the Hall one.

The Grabovski contract was probably used as a template on this one.

LOL at him getting that much over 8 years. if he's getting the max term, the team should be getting a discount, not overpaying. he should thank parise, that situation helped zajac bend NJ over.

Way to go Lou.!! Love the terms at a good price. Zajac mean's more to this team then Zack did. As much as i liked Zack i'm glad that we didn't over pay to keep him like the WILD did. Zajac for captain !!

Hey NJ fans, welcome to months of people not understanding long term contracts and a players worth to their team! (aka Hall)

Good contract and if NJ fans are this happy, it's probably for a reason. But no, he got too much I'm sure.

Flippula doesn't have as much leverage as Zajac though.
He is not #1 center on our team and won't be for at least few more years.
His career high number was when he was playing as a wing not center.

Flippula probably could get a lot of money if he goes to FA but probably not from DET.

He was hurt last year showed up in time for the playoffs and was great.

We know what he can do, more importantly the management knows what he can do.

Yes it was a slight overpayment. Travis and his agent are not stupid they know NJ needed to keep him bad. He would of been able to get 6m out of someone on the open market so I am more than happy.

GVT from the Zajac's last two full seasons suggest otherwise.

This is a tremendous deal for New Jersey.

I guess I'm underestimating the guy, because I would never have given him such a huge contract.

I'll be alright with O'Reilly signing for 5M$ then..

I gotta laugh at those calling this an overpayment, it might not be the hometown discount but it's a VERY fair contract, anyone who thinks this is an overpayment have no clue the player Zajac is.

On what basis? Your first response will be typical. He's injury-prone. He's only injury prone if you expect him to have his face stepped on or his ankle twisted in a random fight....every season.

Both good contracts.

Both good contracts.
One has played more and is UFA. The other is RFA. One is a center. One is a left wing.

I don't think we can evaluate the AAV of any contract signed right now. We just don't know how the terms of the new CBA (contract length, new size of the cap, some of the little tweaks) are going to affect the market. For all we know, the Devils just got a really good deal, or they just got completely screwed.

As a Devils fan, I'm okay with committing to Travis Zajac as a #1 or #2 center for the next 8 years. He's way more valuable than his score sheet suggests, and the run that the Devils went on between the end of the regular season and the Stanley Cup Finals last year almost perfectly coincides with Zajac's return from injury. We shouldn't split hairs about the difference between a $5.75 million cap hit and a $5 million cap hit.

It's a very fair contract for Zajac at his current play. If he take another step, it'll look even better. He was one of my favorite players at UND and happy to see him making a name for himself in the NHL.
