Here in NJ we will gladly overpay (to an extent) to keep such a integral player.

Precisely why I was surprised with the money he's getting. Granted, I never watch the Devils play, but based purely on his production, there's no way he deserves 6mil/yr over EIGHT years.

Eh, not really. Both are young.

Aside from a 28 game stint, Kesler started full time at 21 as well.

5.75m over eight years?

I'd say a pretty decent deal for the Devils. Nice work.

Then it's not a well-informed opinion, isn't it? I mean, by your own admission, you *never* watch them play.

I think its a pretty solid deal. Reminds me of how people treat the Pomminville contract, good to the fan base but appears to be an over-payment to everyone else..

Weird, huh.
But those just some statistics.
Your 10x number is probably correct though.
Why are Kesler's seasons as a 4th liner relevant to how good he is now?

Mike Richards signed his deal mid-way through his breakout season. His career high up to that point was 34 points and he was RFA to be. Also the cap was much lower.

Then stop talking like you do. Or like you know the Devils roster situation for that matter.

Wow. Surprised at the price. I was thinking 5M.

ew, this is terrible. if the cap was gonna be 70m and up for the foreseeable future, this would be okay. but in this case, zajac ripped NJ off

I never expected Zajac to get 5,75avg deal... I'm looking at these stats and it makes me think of Gomez statistics with more goals scored...

I barely know his role on the team but I honestly don't think he deserves that much...That lock-out didn't change anything imo

I like him, but this is quite an overpayment given that the term is 8 years.

How is that relevant at all? Oh, because it is the only way to rationalize your argument.

Look at the past 3 or 4 seasons instead.

Seems like now Devils need to overpay a little to get players to stay there.

Considering Grabovski got 5.5 million (which is overpayment), it's decently fair. Term is a bit much but they couldn't lose Parise AND Zajac.

As Freidmann put with the Kovalchuk contract. It's not hard for Lou to give out 8 years since he might not be around (as in retire) past 3-4 years.

Sounds a bit high.

Then again, there aren't many other gigantic, effective shutdown centers that can score (Hanzal, Jordan Staal, Mikko Koivu....maybe Sean Couturier somewhere down the road...don't think I'm missing anyone else) in the sport, so I guess the Devils are paying for scarcity.

Edit:

I guess Berglund might count, too.

Richards makes 5.75 per year and it also took 12 years to get it to that hit. So no, he doesn't make more than Richards.

I don't really like the thought of signing players to 8 year deals, but if that's what it took for the devils to get it done, then they did what they had to do. Couldn't let him walk.

You don't get it. The #1 center of a perennial playoffs contender is worth that kind of deal.
