Whew.

I thought he was as good as gone.

Great news. Not upset at all about the terms.

Wow I had guessed 4@4.5
Was I ever off the mark there. lol
I think the Devils might have overpayed to keep him in NJ.

I thought Plekanec would have been a good contract to compare.

Not only he signed for 750 000$ more but he also has an 8 years deal.

Might be a slight overpay, but that will be determined by how he rebounds from last year. Good security for the Devils though.

My first thought was that it was a bit too much money for him considering the term. But we have yet to see how contracts will look under the new CBA. In the end it might be a steal...or a terrible contract who knows.

From what I see Devils fans are happy. So good for them.

It seems a bit high right now, but that's the cost of getting a guy for 8 years. This will look really good in 3-4 years.

The one thing that really is weird to me is that he'll be 36 during the last year. I just don't see Zajac being a near 6m per year player at that age. And before Devils fans chime in about Rangers players, I feel the same about Callahan (and frankly believe that he'll wear out before Zajac will).

Holy overpayment...
Deserves 4.5 maybe, but 5.75...lol.
And yes, I've seen him play, dozens of times.

Yes, but to say that then leads him to being the better player now is to ignore player development.

How is that relevant at all? Oh, because it is the only way to rationalize your argument.

Look at the past 3 or 4 seasons instead.
Or because Zajac was more important to the Devils than Kesler was to the Canucks at the start of their careers?

How many 27yr 6'3'' 200 lbs two-way centers who play 1st line minutes, PK, and PP go for under 6 million?

I'm not so hung up on the 5.75M... I can see that maybe on a 4-5 year deal. I would have guessed $5M or so, so that's not an entirely different realm.

It's the 8 years I'm baffled by.

Yes, but once again, that has no bearing on how good each player is now.

Nobody is arguing Zajac's value to the Devils, we're arguing that he's being overpayed for what he provides when compared to his peers. I don't know how you can argue against this, it's obvious.

I see you're still trying to make yourself feel better about losing ZACH (not Zack) Parise by saying he wasn't important anyway. And of course Parise was overpayed, it was free agency, everyone is overpayed in free agency.

As for the Zajac contract, the amount is a little more than I would've thought, but at least NJ is able to keep him. He seems like a promising young center and should be their no. 1 center for a long time to come.

For those who are unfamiliar with Travis Zajac:

Travis Zajac is a very good player. At his best (so, every season that's not 2010-2011), he's a strong offensive player who is among the league's best on defense. He plays big minutes on the penalty kill, power play, and at even strength. He allows his linemates (so, now and forever, Kovalchuck) to open up a little bit, although he is fast enough to join the rush when he needs to. He rarely takes a bad penalty.

After Kovalchuck and Parise, he was easily our best forward in the playoffs last year.

I know that Zajac is a very valuable player for the Devils but that is an insane amount of money for a guy who has scored over 60 pts twice, 44 in his last full season and only 6 in 15 games last season. I know that there's more to points and that he's very good defensively with quality intangibles but they basically paid a 2nd line center 1st line money.
I thought between $4.5-5 mil/yr would have been appropriate but 5.75 mil/yr is a crazy overpayment.

No doubt Kesler is the better player now, no argument there. But since Zajac joined the Devils there's been a lot asked of him, more than Kesler in my opinion, and has jelled with top scorers which is why i believe it is a fair contract and no overpayment by any means

I can think of a 5'11" one whose provided more offence over the past 4 years get 5.5 and still seen as a massive overpayment.
