Doughty has great skill but Pie is a more complete player and leader. Pie's defense is better also.
Doughty is about as complete a player as they come. Until Pietrangelo brings the physical edge that Doughty does I would have a hard time saying he's more "complete."
Both great players though. Can't go wrong with either.
Doughty is the best defencemen in the world when hes on his game, consistency is good and all but Doughty brings consistency at a much higher level than Pietrangelo when it matters the most.
If your not bringing it all the time, your not bringing it consistentally.
We missed him by one freakin' pick. 1 pick determines whether you get Alex Pietrangelo or Luke Schenn (I know Karlsson went 15th that draft...but he wasn't projected to go anywhere near top 5 then).
As of right now, I'm going to have to go with Doughty.
Already has his name on the Cup. There are lots of amazing players through history whose name didn't end up on the Cup. Cup wins are one of the first things people look at, right or wrong, when determining which player had a better career.
When people look back after their careers are over, people won't think about how Pietrangelo brought it night in and night out while Doughty coasted through the regular season (<-- perceived coasting, I dont' watch many Kings regular season games). They will remember how these guys played in the playoffs. And Doughty brings it in the playoffs. I think he should have won the Conn Smythe over Quick personally.
The best thing Pietrangelo has going for him in this poll is his style of play. If Doughty only plays 14 years due to injuries piling up from his play style, and Pietrangelo plays 19, then he might stand a chance.
Doughty. Brings it when it matters most. He's consistently the best player when it matters, world juniors, olympics and playoffs. I like Pietrangelo but he doesn't have the same top level as Doughty.
