[SEA/WAS/OAK] Michael Morse to Seattle in 3 team deal

Quote:
The Nationals traded slugger Michael Morse to the Seattle Mariners in a three-way trade that netted them right-hander A.J. Cole, the pitching prospect who last winter served as the centerpiece of the trade that brought Gio Gonzalez from the Oakland A’s to the Nationals. The Mariners sent catcher John Jaso to the Oakland to complete the deal.

Don't really like the Oakland angle of this, great deal for the other two.

Seattle still doesn't have enough offense, but it's a vast improvement.

(no particular order) Ackley, Montero, Morse, Morales, Seager, Saunders.

Now it's time to see if Montero can be the full time guy behind the plate.

They have Zunino, too.

Don't know why Oakland would do this

Not a fan of it for Seattle.

Jaso is a Billy Beane type of player. His numbers last year were impressive.

Amazing deal for the Nats. Top prospect (who they already know) for an extra piece. And apparently they're getting another good prospect in the deal. Seems like a hefty price for Oakland when all they're getting is John Jaso, who is a good player but not worth a top prospect plus another prospect.

why the mariners got involved in this is puzzling.

Cole was 0-7 with a 7.82 ERA in Class A last year, I've always thought Jaso was a Beane type of player I like it for all 3 teams but Seattle now has added 3 players with good power (which they really needed) but they all should be DH'ing, hell even there starting catcher should be a DH but itwill be interesting to see how they handle this.

at the cost of a quality player like jaso?

morse is half a player. he rakes. he can't play defense.

the mariners weakened themselves at catcher, apparently to try montero there full time? and added another probable dh...at the expense of a really, really good catcher.

1. It was 38 innings.

2. His walk and strikeout numbers were still good.

3. Don't use the Cal League in basing your opinions on pitchers or hitters because that is the most hitter friendly league in the minors. It's absolutely ridiculous how that league inflates offensive numbers and ruins pitchers numbers. The Brewers moved out of High Desert to extremely pitcher friendly Brevard County because the Cal League skews numbers that badly.

Agree. This is a terrible trade for the Mariners. Jaso is the better hitter, younger, cheaper and he was so much better suited for Safeco Field than Morse. Not to mention Jaso actually plays a premium position, while Morse plays no position at all.

I can't fathom how the Seattle GM would think this is a good idea.

Jaso is the better hitter if he hits like he did in 2012. If he reverts back to what he was before then Morse is better.

not really.

morse is 31 without a position. jaso is 29 at a premier position that he plays well.

Cole took a hit in value enough to move down to #3 in the A's organization, according to BA and Sickels. His return to high A next year is critical.

There is no reason to like this from a Mariner perspective. Even if you think Jaso was a fluke last season, he'll be making peanuts for the next three seasons. If he continues to rake, that's awesome. If he regresses, he's still a half-decent catcher, but it's a risk the team has to take.

I would have much rather traded prospects for Morse.

Zunino is going to make people forget about Jaso extremely quickly.
