I guess the Florida/Buffalo trade fell through because now our scouts are in Toronto.

Torontos 2014 2nd round pick was the best player the Leafs had out on the ice tonight.

Easy yes from me although Toronto would be stupid to do it.

no way leafs do that trade straight up even with a signed ror, wed have to add big time. If they are moving him, they are embracing a full rebuild which will mean picks and prospects too.

No. Kessel doesn't make those around him better, O'Reilly does. Kessel is one-dimensional, O'Reilly isn't. O'Reilly can play in all situations, Kessel can't.

Would I take Kessel on this team? Sure I would. But not for that price.

You wouldnt trade a two way center who may be able to eventually play a cemented 1st line role for a proven first line winger with game breaking ability. Pretty sure your fake owner just fired you.

We're not playing fantasy hockey here, pal.

Kessel has game-breaking ability? Really? How many games has he singlehandedly won for the Leafs? How many seasons has he carried them? How many Cups did the Bruins miss out on after he left?

No thanks. I'm not into trading away O'Reilly for Kessel who'll be a UFA after next year, and looking for a raise on his $5.4M.

Kessel is a guy you stick on a line with your two weakest top six forwards and he can cheat a bit and gallop up the ice and take his shots. He's good for around 30 goals doing that. But outside that he doesn't do much.

It's really hard incorporating a guy like that on a team that wants to go far in the playoffs. A few games a year after the coach publicly questions his willingness to work, he'll hustle a bit on the back check but he always falls back to his bad habits.

Some guys have it and some don't. Apart from his speed (elite) and his shot (close to elite), he hasn't got much.

If we've got $5.4M/year to burn, I'd rather give it to RoR than Kessel. I'd like our chances of winning better with him.

I dont have a hard on for Kessel in particular but this team has holes. And Center is the only area we have depth (aside from poor D) Id much rather have two more potent scoring lines than 3 spread out lines with Oreilly.

Kessel isnt someone to build around I agree, but hes a damn good piece to add. And in my earlier post, I said having Kessel is better than having an O'reilly who doesn't want to sign here.

I think its in the teams best interest in the long run to plug one of our major holes in this line up with a ROR trade who at this point had made himself a luxury.

Landeskog - Stastny - Kessel
McGinn - Duchene - PAP

100% agreed, an elite goal-scoring winger is a serious need. I've said before the team will have to look outside the organization in order to fill that void, and already made one step toward doing so (Parenteau). The fact they took away the defense's ability to jump into the play and assist a not-so-talented forward corps only compounds the problem.

That said, if the Avs trade O'Reilly, I think they'll be repeating the same mistake they made in 2002 when they dealt Drury and Yelle to the Flames. I still say the Avs didn't suffer because of Drury's absence NEARLY as much as they did Yelle's. After SY left, the team kind of fell apart defensively and on the PK. We were left with a succession of third line centers, some more successful (Nikolishin, Laperriere) than others (Arnason) until Ryan O'Reilly came along and addressed that glaring need in a BIG way. And while John Mitchell has been a phenomenal fill-in thus far, he'll come back to earth soon enough. No offense to the guy, it's just silly to ask him to fill that role when he was brought aboard as a 4th line center.

I have no idea if O'Reilly truly wants out at this point. If he does, this situation has been mishandled and bungled by both sides in an abominable way. I think it's still salvageable at this point...but not for much longer.

Yea that is pricey. Coming down from fantasy land I think I'd rather they traded ROR for a partner for EJ, since i think thats more pressing than another goal scorer.

We need goalscoring in a bad way. It's frustrating to see us struggle to score, especially on the PP.

We probably need someone with a bit of goalscoring touch going forward. Until then, our best hope is that McGinn/Duchene/Landeskog/Jones/Parenteau/Stastny can at least be steady 20+ goal guys.
