I think I personally am a bigger fan of Ristolainen, but thats based of limited viewings of both and as I do more research near the draft my opinion could easily change.

I would love to draft either of those two if some of our more obvious needs cannot be satisfied.
I'm really liking Phaneuf's game this year. He looks like the old Dion (minus the big hits). What I really want, if we're going to add a piece on the backend, is someone like Rasmus, who really brings a complete game to your top 3-4. Rielly with Phaneuf, Ristolainen with Gardiner, and Finn/Blacker/Percy with Gunnar/Holzer/.

Every pairing would have ample defensive prowess, and the ability to play a solid transition game that would put other teams on the back peddle.

Yup I totally agree. The mobility in both Nurse and Risto is what really excites me. Gives them every tool they need IMO.

Agreed.

We can never have enough of a good thing, even though it might upset others as we aren't getting a center or a forward, but those guys look be very very strong.

Yup. If we landed either of them, I would be extremely open to moving Blacker / Percy / Finn in any deals. It wouldnt phase me at all. Key is finding a complimentary player that fits our D and I think those two could do it.

Obvious need is still to land that top C and I think this could be a draft to do it. And I am personally hoping that if there is a top one available, we are drafting a goalie in the second round.

Right now 10-15 I like:

Adam Erne: More aggressive Kulemin with the ability to fight.

Darnell Nurse: Big, mobile defenceman, with a mean streak and offensive upside.

Frederik Gauthier: Big, two-way center. Good skater, nice shot, and hands. Kind of a poor man's Couturier.

Anthony Mantha: Big, can skate and score. A mix of JVR and James Neal I think in terms of playing style.

Nikita Zadorov: Punishing defenceman with untapped offensive upside.

Josh Morrissey: Offensive defenceman. Better shot than Reilly, likes to hit more. Excellent skater, hockey IQ and puck skills are good but not quite on Reilly's level yet.

Max Domi: Reminds me of Kadri. Smaller, but I think he's a better skater.

anyone know if the russian kid Zykov on Baie-comeau is draft eligible this year. Everytime I've watched him play he's terrorized the other team he's got a decent mix of size and skill

He'll be 18 in May, so I would imagine he is eligible. Over PPG in his first year in the Q, leads his team in points (2nd in PPG behind 20-year-old Straka), 6'1, 215lbs. Sounds like he'd be a nice compliment to Kulemin and Grabo, though who knows if they'd be around by the time he developed an NHL-calibre game.

Exactly. And if we do end up with a surplus of talented young defensemen, we can just trade Rundblad for Tarasenko

Islanders show Leaf fans

That their team again is one of the front runners for the 1st overall pick in the 2013 Draft.

This is a good year to dip into the QMJHL. So much talent there.
i agree with the q being particularily high in talent this year. however mantha's upside isny nearly as high as nuchushkins. i like mantha but nichushkin is a top ten talent, mantha a 15-25 talent. if nichuskin hits his upside, you have a perry or nash (80 point nash)

I'm just yet to see where this crazy offensive potential comes from. I know a lot of Russians who think Barbashev is already a better talent. I guess I just haven't seen him put on a show offensively yet....

I like Nichushkin, but I would take Shinkaruk over him. If Valeri's name was Micheal Smith from Edmonton, Alberta things might be different however.

I would take Mantha over Nichuskin. I remember someone asking me this earlier (I think it was ErnieLeafs?). Mantha has serious goal-scoring ability, and will without a doubt score 30 goals in this league. Think of James Neal. Mantha is easily one of the best finishers in this entire draft.

Anyway, I think defense is still a serious problem for the Leafs. Now that they appear to have some sort of defensive system in place, it's about drafting the right players who are smart, and can legitimately shut-down the other team's best players, regardless of who they are. Rielly and Gardiner are only a start.

So you're admitting that you wouldn't take a superior player because he's Russian?

On possibly the best QMJHL class of all time

Anthony Mantha

On Mantha's 5th Hat Trick

http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/jrh...052025767.html

Right now I think the draft has an elite 8 of Jones, Mack, Drouin, Barkov, Monahan, Lindholm, Nicushkin, and Mantha.

It's way too early to give the standings any credence, but I don't care. It would make for an interesting draft though.

1. Washington: Seth Jones
2. Los Angeles: Nathan Mackinnon
3. Calgary: Alex Barkov
4. Phoenix: Jonathan Drouin
5. Florida: Sean Monahan
6. New York (R): Elias Lindholm
7. Philadelphia: Darnell Nurse
8. Detroit: Valeri Nicushkin
9. Carolina: Anthony Mantha
10. Columbus: Adam Erne
11. Vancouver: Josh Morrisey
12. Winnipeg: Hunter Skinkaruk
13. Nashville: Nikita Zadorov
14. Toronto: Frederik Gauthier
15. Edmonton: Zack Fucale
16. Buffalo: Rasmus Ristolainen
17. Colorado: Ryan Pulock
18. Pittsburgh: Curtis Lazar
19. Montreal: Max Domi
20. Tampa Bay: Artturi Lehkonen
21. Minnesota: Kerby Rychel
22. New York (I): Anthony Duclair
23. New Jersey: Robert Hagg
24. Anaheim: Ryan Hartman
25. Dallas: Jacob de la Rose
26. Boston: Bo Horvat
27. St. Louis: Shea Theodore
28. San Jose: Jason Dickenson

Guys you need to watch Dickinson more. Kid is real strong. Powerforward in the making, but has some unreal offensive skills. Reminds me of Corey perry when he was with London
