Bears do re-sign Jay Cutler, others

RT @AdamSchefter: Major moves: Bears GM Phil Emery announced Chicago has re-signed QB Jay Cutler, G Matt Slauson and CB Tim Jennings.

Yeah, Slauson and Jennings are keys, but I don't think we'll be talking about them

It was really their only option.

They better figure out a way to keep him healthy, though.

Reserving judgement until I find out the financials. Have wanted him back, but not at top dollar, elite QB cash.

For QB-needy teams — Vikings, Texans, Jaguars, etc. — the draft is now really the only option. Also, Mark Sanchez/Michael Vick’s stock soar

lolwut?

Term is no big deal. Can't imagine they couldn't get out of that after 2.

Not a big fan of Cutler but if they got him at 10-12 million a year it's a good signing. That sounds crazy but in a world where Joe freaking Flacco makes 20 mil it is acceptable. All about price-value ratio.

Per @alexmarvez, Cutler extension averages $18M in the first 3 years. That suggests a guarantee in the $50M-$55M range, which sounds right.

Hope so for the Bears sake. They do have a lot of cap freedom but if you're going to re-sign Tillman/Melton/DJ Williams and make some upgrades at safety and OL they're going to need some wiggle room.

Upgrades at the OL? I guess center, but that's doable in the draft. Especially with the fat boy whisperer Kromer.

I'm not sure if Cutler is mediocre because his OL is so bad or he just isn't that good

Regardless I am kind of hazy about this deal

No, he's good, but not great, and certainly sounds like he's about to get overpaid.

Center and right tackle IMO. Garza is barely average, I like Mills but only at guard. Sign a good FA center, shift Mills to LG and draft a big right tackle who can really run block and you're in good shape.

Would've thought at most they'd resign him for 2/3 years.

Wasn't suggesting that Mills be handed a starting job. Let them fight it out. My point was that the Bears could really use a good run blocker on the right side. I don't have any stats in front of me or anything but according to personal observation the Bears had a lot of success running behind the left side of the line and not much on the right. That's just a gut feel though.

I won't argue that the Bears really got better on the OL this season, but there's still a lot of room for improvement. They still have at least 2 starters and maybe 3 most would consider average or worse.

They may have actually resigned him for 2-3 years. Really hard to tell in the NFL without the full contract details on bonuses, guaranteed money, etc since contracts aren't guaranteed.
